Hong Kong Remake of Richard Linklater’s ‘Tape’ Secures U.K. Distribution, Sets Raindance Bow (EXCLUSIVE)

UK-based Showalker has secured the rights to distribute the British remake of “Tape,” a psychological drama originally directed by Richard Linklater, which is slated to premiere in the UK for the first time at the 2025 Raindance Film Festival in London.

The film adaptation in Cantonese, helmed by Bizhan Tong, includes Richard Linklater as an executive producer, along with John Sloss (“Green Book”) and Stephen Belber (“The Madness”). Together with Tong, they co-wrote the script for this project.

The movie features Kenny Kwan, who starred in “The White Storm 3”, Selena Lee from “Barrack O’Karma”, and Adam Pak of “Paradox”. Notably, the British musician Keaton Henson composed the music for this production. The film underwent post-production in London, as it was a collaboration between Hong Kong and the UK.

Tong expressed great pride in debuting at Raindance with a film that intentionally connects cultures,” he said. “This production is unique as it combines East and West creativity, boasting backing from esteemed Hollywood figures while featuring a Hong Kong cast and team. It serves as a testament to the global narratives that Hong Kong cinema can convey, and demonstrates that collaborative efforts do not diminish identity but rather magnify it.

Showalker U.K., a new distribution company founded by Linus Leung, a Hong Kong producer and entrepreneur, launches its first venture with this acquisition. The goal of Showalker is to establish a unique place in the U.K. market for the distribution of culturally distinctive yet commercially successful Asian cinema. Their focus will be on movies from Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan, and other regions that offer such content.

The ‘Tape’ project, as Leung stated, is an exciting and pertinent initiative that truly embodies Showalker U.K.’s aim: connecting cultures via cinema that is both artistically profound and commercially impactful. This remake not only preserves Linklater’s original concept but reinterprets it with a distinctive Hong Kong perspective, resonating strongly with worldwide viewers.

Movie6, an online movie platform based in Hong Kong, has been chosen as the main media collaborator for the U.K. premiere, catering to fans of Asian cinema and diaspora communities alike.

The distribution agreement in the U.K. comes after advance screenings in Hong Kong and deals struck for distribution in several Asian countries.

Raindance runs from June 18-27.
