Hong Kong Police Say Mobile Game Advocates For The Fall Of Chinese Government

This week, headlines around the world featured a new installment in China’s ongoing battle with video games and their influence on society. The government of Hong Kong claims that the game Reversed Front: Bonfire encourages “revolutionary activities with weapons” and aims to overthrow the “basic structure” of mainland China.

The game titled “Bonfire” was surreptitiously launched, masking its true purpose: to propagate separatist ideologies like ‘Taiwan independence’ and ‘Hong Kong independence.’ It encourages armed revolution and aims to undermine the basic structure of the People’s Republic of China as outlined in its Constitution. Additionally, it seeks to instigate antagonism towards the Central Government and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s administration. This is according to an official statement released by authorities.

Individuals engaging in activities such as downloading, using, or making in-app purchases within the app Reversed Front: Bonfire could potentially breach the city’s national security regulations, as further explained in the subsequent statement.

This game, released by ESC Taiwan, invites players to declare loyalty to actual geographical areas such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Mongolia, Tibet, and others. The objective, as stated on the game’s site, is to “topple the Communist regime.” The publisher labels this game as a factual representation.

The fundamental gameplay for Reversed Front: Bonfire, as depicted in the publisher’s video releases, involves players managing groups of multiple characters during turn-based battles. These battle sequences are interspersed with narrative segments conveyed through visuals and dialogues.

According to the site, any resemblance found in this game to real Chinese government departments, policies, or ethnic groups is deliberately made so.

The game designer acknowledges the announcement made by the Hong Kong authorities, expressing gratitude for facilitating an entirely fresh group of gamers to discover their creation.
