Hong Kong Forum Brings Five Asian Gems to Cannes Market Showcase

At this year’s Marche du Film, the “Goes to Cannes” program of the Cannes Film Festival will again shine a light on five promising Asian film projects from the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF). This highlights another robust year for the budding filmmakers of Asia.

The 2025 presentation features an array of narratives hailing from various parts of Asia, all set to be finished in production this year. Notably, drama takes the lead as the most prevalent genre, delving into profound examinations of personal ties, societal strains, and intricate character portrayals.

As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that China is taking the lead with two submissions this year! One of these, “Her First Taste” by Gong Yiwen, is a captivating tale about a young girl’s journey towards understanding and expressing the complexities of young love. The narrative subtly unfolds as she forms a connection with a boy, delving into the unspoken queries that define this tender stage of life. This heartfelt production is a collaboration between Yiwen Films and Sparks Production, under the guidance of producer Qian Yini. Remarkably, it’s been filmed in Putonghua and Shengzhou dialects, making it a unique cinematic experience for audiences.

The second film of Chinese origin, jointly produced with Hong Kong, is titled “Say My Name,” directed by Liu Xing. This drama-romance follows the story of Liang Nian’er, a 20-year-old character who hides her true identity while chasing after feelings that are not genuinely hers. The film is available in both Cantonese and Mandarin, with production credits to Lyu Yue, Mo Jinjin, and Duan Tingting from Star Lab Production.

In simpler terms, the Indonesian film industry is gaining recognition with the directorial debut of actor Reza Rahadian titled “On Your Lap” (Pangku). This drama tells the story of a resourceful pregnant woman struggling for a better life amidst deceit and challenging decisions. The Indonesian-language production, produced by Arya Ibrahim and Gita Fara from Gambar Gerak, is set to be showcased at Cannes.

In “Shape of Momo,” directed by Tribeny Rai, we delve into the journey of multiple women spanning different generations as they maneuver through societal norms that favor patriarchy. The producers for this Nepali-language film are Kislay and Geeta Rai from Kathkala Films LLP and Dalley Khorsani Productions.

Completing our lineup is the psychological drama “White Flowers and Fruits” by director Sakamoto Yukari, hailing from Japan. This film delves into the fallout of a school suicide at a boarding institution, as two students gradually unearth buried secrets with the help of a supernatural possession angle. Yamamoto Teruhisa, known for his work on “Drive My Car,” is the producer, under Chiaroscuro Co., Ltd.

The “Goes to Cannes” program has grown into a crucial stage for exhibiting works-in-progress and linking filmmakers with possible distributors, sales representatives, and festival curators. The chosen films by HAF are among the most promising projects from one of Asia’s top film financing events.
