Hollow Knight: Silksong dev planning DLC before long-awaited game is even out

Fans of the game Hollow Knight: Silksong have eagerly anticipated its release for quite some time now, and even before it’s out, developers have started dropping hints about potential downloadable content after launch.

Since its initial announcement in 2019, Hollow Knight: Silksong, a follow-up to the highly praised metroidvania game, has remained one of the most eagerly awaited games under development. Yet, despite the passage of years and much conjecture, an official launch date for

Although some had anticipated it might debut during Summer Game Fest, it wasn’t showcased there. However, it played a significant role in the ROG Xbox Ally handheld unveiling. Even more excitingly, developers Team Cherry confirmed its release is imminent, set for late in 2025.

Meanwhile, with the anticipation growing for the sequel, a team member working on the project hinted at the possibility of Downloadable Content (DLC) being released following its launch.

Hollow Knight: Silksong could get DLC after launch

During a live chat on Primacon’s YouTube stream on June 11th, the marketing head of Silksong, Matthew “Leth” Griffin, addressed queries regarding the game’s future plans by hinting at the possibility of additional content, stating: “We’ll always consider DLC.

Although it was welcomed by certain gamers who looked forward to additional content in the future, not everyone shared the same sentiment. In response to a Reddit post by ‘Dreak1319’, some fans voiced concerns about discussing expansions prior to the release of the primary game itself.

“RELEASE THE GOD DAMN GAME BEFORE TALKING ABOUT DLC!” said one reply.

“We don’t even have a game, where did the dlc come from?” added another.

Spectators playfully hinted at the possibility that Team Cherry could find themselves repeating a recurring pattern: “I sincerely hope this expansion doesn’t expand into a comprehensive game that requires eight years to complete.

Originally, Silksong was planned as an expansion pack for the initial Hollow Knight game. However, it eventually evolved into a complete standalone sequel instead.

Although it’s not definitive proof of the Silksong DLC, given the playful nature of the statement, it’s plausible that this could be true. After all, the first game saw four free add-ons offering additional content like levels, features, and bosses.

As we approach the release of the game towards the end of this year, it’s uncertain what will follow, but it’s quite possible that the launch marks just the start of an exciting journey.
