Hollow Knight: Silksong confirms 2025 release

During Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct presentation, there were many shocking revelations; however, one of the most jaw-dropping moments was the fleeting appearance of Hollow Knight: Silksong. If you’ve been even slightly tuned into the video game sphere in recent years, you might have come across buzz about one of the most eagerly awaited indie games in history. The follow-up to the captivating action metroidvania, Hollow Knight, was initially announced in 2018, but since then, there’s been very little fresh news. At this stage, it has practically become a running joke.

Hollow Knight: Silksong appeared for five seconds in the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct

Over the past several years, during live streams of video game showcases, enthusiastic fans have been expressing their anticipation for Silksong in the chat section. The level of excitement around this game has grown so much that even minor changes, like a developer updating their social media profile picture, can spark numerous theories about future updates. Nowadays, it’s become commonplace to not expect SilksongHollow Knight: Silksong has gained such a following that it’s been compared to Grand Theft Auto 6 in the indie gaming world. If they were to release a trailer tomorrow, it might eclipse the news about the Nintendo Switch 2.

Initially, the game Silksong was anticipated to drop in 2023, but it faced a delay. Surprisingly, fans remained patient at that time. However, as we’ve moved three months into 2025, their patience might be wearing thin. This “sophomore slowdown” is a common phenomenon among successful independent game developers. Last year, Earthblade, the sequel to the popular indie hit Celeste, was scrapped after years of challenging production. Despite this, the successor to Stardew Valley isn’t cancelled yet, but it’s unlikely we’ll see it soon. Some of these indie game creators have discussed the burden of living up to their past success. Not only does it impose immense pressure on them, in certain instances, it gives them such financial security and stability that there’s no urgency to release the next title immediately.

Yesterday during Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, Hollow Knight: Silksong made an appearance in the third-party highlights reel – a part where brief clips of multiple games are showcased with minimal introduction or pomp. What was surprising wasn’t just that it showed up at all, but also that a substantial game like this was only displayed for approximately five seconds. It doesn’t seem like we were given any new gameplay footage to look forward to either.

The key point from the announcement of Silksong is that they’ve set a 2025 release date for the game. After such a long wait, this could potentially be the year we get to play it. A developer has confirmed on social media that Hollow Knight: Silksong is indeed in development and will eventually be released. It’s also worth noting that they mentioned it will be available for the Switch 2. For now, we can only hope for more updates.
