Hogwarts Legacy, the Harry Potter game, has become one of the best-selling video games ever, with over 40 million copies sold globally.
Today, December 17th, Warner Bros. Games announced that their game has sold 40 million copies, making it a huge success. While incredibly popular, it hasn’t quite reached the level of the top 10 best-selling games of all time. This announcement comes as its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, is in the process of being sold to either Netflix or Paramount.
Hogwarts Legacy was created by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games. Warner Bros. releases Harry Potter games under the label ‘Portkey Games’.
Hogwarts Legacy takes place in the 1800s, and players begin their journey as fifth-year students at Hogwarts, learning magic and befriending fantastic beasts. Remarkably, in 2023, it became the best-selling game in North America, surpassing even Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III – a rare feat considering Call of Duty’s long-held dominance.
As a huge fan of Hogwarts Legacy, I’m so glad to hear Warner Bros. Games is already thinking about a sequel – it’s awesome that they’re making it a big focus! And get this – it sounds like we might be getting a similar kind of game set in the Lord of the Rings universe too, which is incredibly exciting!
The game Hogwarts Legacy has faced criticism because of comments made by Harry Potter author JK Rowling that have been considered transphobic. While she wasn’t directly involved in making the game, she will financially benefit from its sales. You can learn more about the impact of Rowling’s statements on the trans community in our detailed article, which also includes resources for supporting trans creators and donating to relevant charities.
