As a gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen countless celebrities grace the digital world, from Hollywood stars to sports legends. However, the recent turn of events surrounding Conor McGregor has left me both surprised and disappointed. The verdict against him in the civil trial for assault is a stark reminder that even our favorite personalities are not immune to the consequences of their actions.

Previously, IO Interactive incorporated UFC fighter Conor McGregor into the Hitman: World of Assassination game as a challenging target for Agent 47 to eliminate. In an Irish court case, Conor McGregor was deemed responsible for an assault against a woman who claimed he violently raped and physically harmed her in 2018. During the trial, the woman recounted that she and McGregor had used cocaine together prior to the incident and that they were acquainted beforehand. She further testified that after she declined his sexual advances, McGregor put her in a chokehold and threatened to kill her until she submitted. In a specific mission, McGregor lent his voice and appearance as The Disrupter, an MMA fighter who became Agent 47’s target. Besides this mission, he was also highlighted in a downloadable content (DLC) package for The Disrupter, which included extra items and cosmetics based on his character. The trailers advertising McGregor’s involvement in the game on YouTube have either been made private or taken down. It remains uncertain if the removal of McGregor’s content will affect those who have already bought and downloaded the relevant DLC.
Before starring in this video game series, Conor McGregor had a short cameo in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare back in 2016. It’s also worth noting that he has been featured in every version of EA Sports UFC so far. At the moment, it remains uncertain whether Activision or EA will take IO Interactive’s approach and remove McGregor from the older games as well.
