During the first IO Interactive Showcase, there was plenty to discuss about Hitman: World of Assassination, but what really caught my attention was the mention of a cooperative mode for Hitman. In an interview following the event, IO explained that this feature is a testament to the ongoing efforts by the Hitman team to discover innovative ways to expand the game.
As Christian Elverdam, CCO of IO Interactive shared with me, even the early sneak peeks of the co-op mode we showcased felt incredibly unique. Playing alongside a friend in that world opens up a whole new gaming experience, and I bet if you’re familiar with the game, your mind would start racing with endless possibilities. For instance, ‘I could handle this situation, while you tackle that one!’
Elverdam shared that the game’s aspirations have kept the team on a continuous exploration, much like the voyage that resulted in the creation of Freelancer mode two years back. Intrigued, I inquired about their support plans for the game, to which he replied they don’t have a fixed timeline. He explained, “We’re still trying to understand the true nature of this project. When our team came up with Freelancer, it was a daring thought: ‘What if we could utilize all this accumulated work in an exciting new way?’ I believe co-op mode will stimulate similar ideas. We feel there’s a lot more ground to cover and innovative paths to explore.
Although Elverdam acknowledged that the cooperative mode is still under development and evolving, he confirmed that it will indeed be a feature within Hitman: World of Assassination, the comprehensive collection for the Hitman series launched since 2016. In essence, Elverdam stated that while details are scarce now, the cooperative mode lies within the World of Assassination and features characters such as Stone and Knight. To add an extra twist, they are experimenting with a unique dynamic for this mode, which will involve two players instead of Diana and Agent 47, making it an exciting departure from the norm. Therefore, we’ll have more to share once they gather additional information about the cooperative mode’s development.
The cooperative mode isn’t available yet, but you can start enjoying the progressive development of Hitman from today and throughout this year. Two more Elusive Targets featuring celebrities have been hinted at for later, while one of these three is already here and free for all players. In this installment, Mads Mikkelsen returns to his role as Le Chiffre from Casino Royale.
