This year signifies the 20th anniversary since the romantic comedy “Hitch,” starring Will Smith, premiered in cinemas. Fans had been eagerly waiting for this role from the action movie veteran and popular comedic actor, as they saw the character of the love guru as a long-awaited addition to his repertoire. Interestingly, Will Smith also took on a producer’s role for the film, with Andy Tennant (known for “Sweet Home Alabama”) directing it. Recently, during an interview, Tennant revealed that making “Hitch” was something of a struggle alongside Smith. He also mentioned that he didn’t receive any communication from the megastar after its release. Currently, Tennant is promoting his latest movie, a genre shift which he found enjoyable to produce. His new film, “Unit 234,” is now playing in theaters and on demand, and during this promotion, he shared some insights about the production of “Hitch” as well.
Affirming the backstage accounts, Hitch was indeed a challenging film to produce, and Tennant further disclosed that Will Smith and the studio are currently developing a sequel without him. Interestingly, Tennant appears unfazed by this development, which given his previous experience making the original movie, is hardly unexpected.
The film wasn’t straightforward to create. I feel the movie I envisioned and the one Will envisioned didn’t turn out as great as the one Will and Andy created together, but it required plenty of discussions and tension. As Tennant told MovieWeb, “The process was challenging, yet rewarding. I understand that Will is working on a sequel without me, which I wish him all the best. After all, he was the producer who brought me on board initially. I’m extremely proud of the movie we made together and grateful for the experience.” In contrast, “Unit 234” was an entirely different experience; we had a fantastic time making it!
“Done With Romantic Comedies”
It’s clear that Tennant and his team enjoyed crafting a compact thriller such as “Unit 234“, with standout, delightfully raunchy performances by Don Johnson and Jack Huston. It’s fun to learn that the director of films like “Fool’s Gold” (2008) and “It Takes Two” (1995), Tennant, oversaw this latest R-rated production.
As a seasoned romantic comedy connoisseur, I’ve reached a point where I feel I’ve exhausted all that can be said about love and its complications. So when the captivating script for “Unit 234” crossed my path, I must confess, I was longing for a change of pace – a thriller, to be exact. My prayers were answered, as this script was not just good, but exceptionally clever with surprising twists that left me guessing. By the end, I found myself questioning if there had been a mix-up, certain it wasn’t intended for me. From the moment I read it, my first thought was, “Why hasn’t this movie been made before?” It seems like such an obvious choice.
Tennant went on, explaining why he chose to place the entire story of Unit 234 inside a storage unit as its backdrop.
The storage facility was quite spooky, even during the daylight. Yet, I found it incredibly smartly designed. Consequently, I was thrilled to become a part of it. What particularly appealed to me was its compact and confined nature. To be honest, I’ve worked on grand productions before, and they follow similar patterns. Each shot is filmed individually. For me, this project was about staying out of the way of the actors, as they were well-versed in their roles. We didn’t have much time or money to spare, so we only filmed what was necessary. I believe that might be why it’s so tight-knit, as there wasn’t any unnecessary content added.
