As a seasoned cinephile who has traversed the cinematic landscapes of various genres and epochs, I must admit that the news of Hiro Murai‘s debut feature film, “Bushido,” stirs an intriguing blend of anticipation and excitement within my cinematic soul. With a portfolio brimming with shortform brilliance, from episodes of “Atlanta” to the groundbreaking “This Is America,” it’s clear that Murai possesses a unique eye for narrative and visual storytelling.

For some time now, fans of Hiro Murai’s work have eagerly awaited a feature-length project from this talented director. Renowned for his work on Atlanta and Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” music video, Murai boasts an impressive portfolio of critically acclaimed shortform projects. According to Deadline, he is now set to make his debut as a feature film director with an original samurai movie titled Bushido, which will be financed and produced by A24. It’s worth noting that Guava Island, a 56-minute film starring Rihanna and Donald Glover from 2019, is generally considered a short film. The Standoff at Sparrow Creek writer-director Henry Dunham will pen the script for Bushido. Although the specifics of the plot are not yet confirmed, we can anticipate high-stakes action set in feudal Japan. Murai and Dunham will produce the movie alongside Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen from Square Peg, as well as Julia Oh, Christine D’Souza Gelb, and David Hinojosa from 24AM Productions. There is currently no release date announced, but it seems that production is moving forward smoothly. Onward, Bushido, onward!
