Highly Limited Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary 4K Blu-Ray In Stock At Amazon

The special 30th Anniversary version of Super Mario Bros., released by Umbrella Entertainment in 2024, is available on Amazon. This anniversary edition features a remastered 4K version of the 1993 live-action movie and includes an alternative cut of the film that has been freshly restored, along with new bonus content. Interestingly, despite selling out alongside the more expensive collector’s editions last year, this edition is now back in stock on Amazon. It should be noted that only 3,000 units of the 4K Blu-ray and 1,500 units of the 1080p Blu-ray were produced, and both versions are shipped and sold by Amazon, each coming with a numbered slip cover.

The 4K remaster costs $56, while the 1080p version is priced at $45. If you reside in the Midwest or a qualifying region, you could find a 30% coupon on Amazon, reducing the price to just $31.50 at checkout.

Important: Umbrella Entertainment is based in Australia, but the 30th Anniversary Edition is a region-free release, making it playable on US Blu-ray players.

It’s likely that the availability of the 30th Anniversary Edition at Amazon is partly because it isn’t very noticeable. With so many different Blu-ray listings for the same movie on Amazon, it can easily be overlooked. For instance, the most popular page for Super Mario Bros. boasts over 8,000 reviews and offers a 4K listing for the 30th Anniversary Edition, but unfortunately, that version is no longer in stock. On the other hand, the page where you can still purchase it only has 58 customer reviews and seems to have been partially hidden due to misleading categorization.

Amazon unintentionally categorized the 4K Blu-ray version as a regular Blu-ray, creating an initial impression that they’re just different priced versions of the same product. However, upon closer inspection, it’s clear that the higher priced option contains both 4K and standard Blu-ray discs, as explained in the detailed product description. In contrast, the less expensive version comes with only two 1080p Blu-ray discs.

Take a closer look at the Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Edition below.

Nintendo granted the movie creators unrestricted access to use the Super Mario Bros. license, which resulted in a remarkably peculiar live-action comedy film featuring an unusual script, bizarre plot twists, humorous dialogues, and unconventional character histories.

In 1993, Super Mario Bros. was heavily criticized and failed at the box office. However, much like other movies deemed “poor,” it has developed a dedicated fanbase over time. As a child, I found its quirkiness appealing, and even now, I admire it as an audacious piece of Nintendo media. It’s bold and takes many risks, some of which don’t quite hit the mark, but its commitment to the unconventional makes it a unique viewing experience. If you’re interested in watching it without spending more than $7.33, consider purchasing Super Mario Bros. on DVD at Amazon (originally priced at $13).

In this movie, the duo of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel took on the role of directors. Bob Hoskins portrayed Mario, while John Leguizamo stepped into the shoes of Luigi. Additionally, Samantha Mathis was cast as Princess Daisy, and Dennis Hopper filled the role of President Koopa.

Initially, the first live-action Hollywood film derived from a video game served as a warning story for Nintendo and both the gaming and movie industries due to its flop. In the following two decades and beyond, most attempts at adapting games into movies were either panned by critics or struggled financially (often suffering from both fates). However, in the past five years or so, this trend has reversed with box office sensations like Pokemon Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, A Minecraft Movie, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie leading the charge.

Nintendo held off for three whole decades before returning the beloved characters from Mario Bros. to the big screen. The 2023 animated remake, jointly produced with Universal Pictures, smashed box office records. Earning over $1.3 billion at the box office, it now stands as the most financially successful video game adaptation of all time. Ranking among the top 20 highest-grossing films overall, it raked in about 35 times more than the 1993 version. At present, the Mario Movie is the only video game adaptation to exceed $1 billion, but a Minecraft Movie could potentially join its ranks soon.

If you’re looking to showcase your unique collection of Mario movie versions, both distinctively different, you can now get the exclusive Steelbook Edition of The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Walmart for $28. This 4K Blu-ray version was released in March and features a yellow Question Block case. If you’re interested in the Power-Up Steelbook Edition that came out in 2023, it’s available at Walmart as well, but it will cost you $50.

1993 wasn’t the initial instance where live-action Super Mario Bros. made its way onto American screens. Instead, “The Super Mario Bros. Super Show,” the first television series adapting the franchise, aired in 1989. This show combined real-life segments with animation that mirrored the gameplay of the first two Mario platformers for NES. However, Nintendo phased out the live-action parts in the sequel series based on “Super Mario Bros. 3” and “Super Mario World.” You can now purchase all three series along with “The Legend of Zelda: The Complete Series,” which was the animated portion of the original Super Mario Bros. show that aired on Fridays, at a discounted price on DVD from Amazon.
