Highguard shutting down one month after launch

I’m really bummed to hear that Highguard is shutting down. It just came out a little over a month ago, but Wildlight Entertainment announced it’s going offline for good on March 12, 2026. It’s a shame, I was hoping it would stick around longer!

I’m really bummed to hear that Highguard is shutting down. Apparently, even though over 2 million of us checked it out, the developers, Wildlight, just couldn’t keep enough players engaged to make it work long-term. They said the servers will be up until March 12th, which is good, and they’re even releasing one last update tonight or tomorrow! It’s adding a new character class called a Warden, a new weapon, and ways to level up your account and unlock skills. It’s a bittersweet ending, but at least they’re going out with a final gift to the community.

We have some tough news to share today. We’ve decided to close Highguard permanently on March 12th. Even though our team put a lot of effort and passion into the game, we haven’t been able to attract enough players to keep it running long-term.

The quick closure of Highguard follows a difficult start for Wildlight’s first game. Though revealed with a lot of hype at The Game Awards in 2025 and released on January 26, 2026, the game received mixed reviews and quickly earned a “Mostly Negative” rating on Steam. It briefly reached a peak of around 97,000 players online.

Following the game’s launch, there were major internal issues at the studio. According to a Bloomberg report, Tencent funded the game but withdrew its support on February 11th. This led to substantial layoffs and left a significantly reduced team responsible for maintaining the game.

Wildlight hasn’t released the complete list of changes for the last update yet, but they say more information will be available soon before the game shuts down. If you haven’t experienced Highguard, you only have about 9 days left to play it as of today.
