High On Life Animated Series Is On The Way

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the news about High on Life getting a television adaptation has left me both intrigued and skeptical. On one hand, the game’s unique humor and bizarre world have piqued my curiosity, making me wonder how it would translate to a visual medium. On the other hand, the technical issues at launch gave me a bit of pause, leaving me hesitant about its potential as a successful series.

High on Life, the first-person shooter from Squanch Games, is set to make its transition from video game to television show. This week, Deadline announced that the project will be a joint effort between the developer and Striker Entertainment, along with production company Alternate Side Productions. According to Deadline’s report.

Award-winning actor JB Smoove, known for his voice in the video game, is announced as a producer of this upcoming project along with his company Alternate Side. It’s unclear at this time whether he will reprise his role. Joining him are Mandy Bardisbanian and Russell Binder from Striker Entertainment, the game’s developer, and narrative director Alec Robbins.

In an interview with Deadline, Smoove shared that when he joined the video game and asked about his character’s appearance, they told him he would be a shooting fish. As a vegan, he found it fitting for a fish to have self-defense abilities, reasoning that every creature should defend itself!

As a longtime fan of JB Smoove’s comedic talent and video games, I am thrilled to hear about his upcoming project – producing an animated series based on the popular game ‘High on Life.’ Having grown up playing video games and appreciating JB’s humor, this collaboration seems like a perfect match. If he chooses to star in the series as well, it will only add to my excitement for the show. I can’t wait to see how he brings his unique comedic touch to a world filled with intergalactic antics and alien characters. Here’s hoping that this project lives up to our expectations!

He stated, “Now that I’ve teamed up with Squanch Games and Striker Entertainment for the production of High On Life, a comedic series, it seems destined! They welcomed me to their gaming universe, and now I’m assisting them in expanding into television. This is like one game acknowledging another!”

Released in December 2022 across consoles and PCs, “High on Life” attracted a variety of opinions due to its humor and initial technical glitches. Despite these issues, it managed to draw in over 7.5 million players since its debut. A post-release DLC titled “High on Knife” was launched almost a year later in October 2023, introducing action-adventure and Metroidvania elements. This expansion made “High on Life” one of the most significant game launches for the Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

It hasn’t been confirmed yet if the original voice actors will return for the animated series of the game, but Deadline hints that Smoove might reprise his role as Gus. At this point, it remains unknown which television network or streaming platform will air the series. We’ll keep you updated once more details emerge.
