2020 found gaming icon Hideo Kojama feeling so unwell that he doubted his ability to ever regain health or create games again, as he shared during an interview with GQ. In the same conversation, he also touched upon his current emotional wellbeing and other topics.
He expressed that due to his health condition, he doubted if he could develop another game again. His severe illness made him contemplate both his life and professional journey.
He shared, “I’d accumulated so many thoughts, so I jotted them down and gave them to my assistant, almost like a testament. In a way, I began to grasp why some choose to take their own lives; it felt like the end of all things.
Apart from his creative work, Kojima experienced severe eye problems which made it difficult for him to venture outside or enjoy movies and TV. Instead of enduring this discomfort, he decided on an operation; however, the procedure unintentionally weakened the muscles responsible for focusing, a fact that the doctor repeatedly assured would be corrected by the brain’s natural ability to adapt. Skeptical about this claim, Kojima expressed his doubts.
Following his illness, Kojima said he now feels “nervous” and “rushed.”
He expressed, “There’s still so much left on my list of things to accomplish – things I need to tackle. I once believed that independence would grant me limitless capabilities, but the truth is, there are boundaries.” He went on to say, “My mind constantly generates unique ideas, but if I were to pursue these, and they failed to sell, my studio could face financial ruin. I am deeply connected with everyone here – the staff, their families. This responsibility weighs heavily upon me.
In a recent interview with GQ, Kojima revealed that his upcoming game, titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” was initially slated for release in 2023. However, due to the impacts of COVID-19, the game will be available this month exclusively on PS5.
Apart from his work on Death Stranding, he’s simultaneously developing several other forthcoming titles such as OD and Physint, and he’s also part of the team working on the A24 film adaptation of Death Stranding.
