Despite the fact that Hideo Kojima might not have a profile on Letterboxd just yet, he’s still managed to share his top four all-time favorite films – and each one of them is nothing short of spectacular!
Prior to crafting the renowned Metal Gear series and garnering international acclaim as a video game creator, Kojima nurtured dreams of making films.
In the same vein as real-life, cinema manages to persevere, and now, that creator is working on a Death Stranding film for A24, along with an animated version of it too.
Kojima frequently posts brief reviews or recommendations of movies on Twitter, or cryptically hints at watching something without further mention if it didn’t meet his standards. Given his extensive use of cinema influences in his video game creations and the impact those games have had on subsequent works, it’s not unexpected that he has a select group of four top-tier favorite films.
Hideo Kojima’s top 4 movies of all time
These are Kojima’s four favourite movies, as per GQ:
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Taxi Driver
- Mad Max 2
- High and Low
Although he mentioned that his preferences shift frequently, these are titles he often favors. In the year 2019, he expressed his admiration for the film 2001 – a standout in the realm of science fiction – to Rotten Tomatoes.
To me, watching ‘Star Wars’ is like seeing a monument each time it plays in theaters. I never miss it. The movie’s release in 1977 sparked a major explosion in the science fiction genre.”
This version maintains the original meaning while using simpler and more conversational language.
Game designer Hideo Kojima shares his top 4 preferred films, as reported by GQ:
1. “2001: A Space Odyssey”
2. “Taxi Driver”
3. “Mad Max 2” (also known as “The Road Warrior”)
4. “High and Low”— ScreenTime (@screentime) June 10, 2025
1991 marked a significant era in space exploration. The journey began long before humans walked on the moon. As a child, my dream was to become an astronaut, however, Japan lacked NASA at that time. One could only join the space programs of the Soviet Union or China.
Though I had to let go of my goal to be an astronaut, watching ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ made me feel as though I had truly ventured into outer space. This film was incredibly impactful for me because it gave the sense that I had achieved a long-held dream.
In his GQ interview, Kojima referred to Taxi Driver and Mad Max 2 as two deities that greatly influenced him. High and Low, a 1963 thriller, was one of the films shown to him by his father, which introduced him to the works of Akira Kurosawa at an early age.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve always found solace in the virtual worlds I explore. It’s not just about winning or beating levels; it’s about the emotions these games stir within me. In one of my past interviews, I shared that they seem to leave an imprint on my heart, and sometimes, this inspiration drives me to create something new.
The following day, I believe it’s important for individuals to find themselves immersed in an engaging environment, much like personal challenges, which includes gaming. Upon returning from such experiences, I aspire that these encounters will leave a subtle imprint on their daily lives.
