Hideo Kojima only realized hilarious Death Stranding 2 mistake when visiting Australia

Without a doubt, Death Stranding 2 stands as one of the top games this year; however, not even its visionary creator, Hideo Kojima, is flawless. Let’s delve into the tale of how this esteemed Japanese game designer spotted a chuckle-worthy blunder.

In easy and natural language: At long last, the follow-up to Kojima’s enigmatic and somber game Death Stranding has arrived, and players are once again stepping into the boots of Norman Reedus for another thrilling escapade. Instead of reforging connections in a post-cataclysmic United States, Sam is now called upon to traverse vast expanses across Australia on his latest mission.

As I embarked on crafting my gaming experience set in this sun-kissed land, extensive research was key to bring an authentic Australian feel alive. Although players won’t physically encounter the Sydney Opera House or marvel at Uluru, they’ll be immersed in a world filled with intricate details that Aussie gamers are sure to recognize as their own.

Specifically, significant focus was given to the game’s diverse wildlife. Australia boasts an impressive variety of species, and Kojima aimed to pay tribute to this in Death Stranding 2. However, it wasn’t until he traveled to Sydney and visited a local zoo that he discovered one major oversight.

Kojima apologizes for hilarious Death Stranding 2 mistake

Due to the ongoing global pandemic, Hideo Kojima couldn’t physically travel to Australia during Death Stranding 2’s production. Instead, he had his team members go to zoos and record various sounds for use in the game. This was shared by Kojima in a group interview prior to the game’s release with TopMob.

It’s well-known that the Australian continent is home to numerous “remarkably distinct” animals, and this diversity increases significantly when you consider New Zealand as well. Given this rich animal life, it seemed appropriate to incorporate “such a variety of animals” into the game.

On the day following his arrival in Sydney for the World Tour, Kojima chose to visit the Taronga Zoo instead. In a chat with George Miller, the creator of Mad Max, later on the same day, he shared that it was during this trip that he discovered an error in Death Stranding 2.

This morning, I visited the zoo and spotted some well-known bird species. However, upon closer observation, I discovered that these birds aren’t native to the correct region in the game. Unfortunately, it seems there was an error on my part. I made this realization during my visit to the zoo today.

An animated Sydney audience burst out laughing when Kojima’s interpreter shared the story with everyone.

Even though I’m no expert on Australian wildlife, having played for more than 100 hours, it’s challenging for me to point out which creature might be misplaced. However, given that Kojima has an eye for detail, there’s a possibility we may witness a future update adjusting the location of a specific animal in the game.
