Hideo Kojima, a renowned game developer, has been open about his serious health issues during the COVID-19 pandemic and feared he might not complete another project. Even after recovering, Kojima continues to ponder over his mortality. However, he doesn’t think that Kojima Productions would continue thriving if he asked his successors to carry on making games in exactly the same way as he does.
I wouldn’t even break the baton… [Laughs] The ‘Hideo Kojima’ brand is mine alone. If I were to pass the torch to my team and instruct them to continue as I do, the company would fail and shut down.
In response to being asked for more details, Kojima clarified that those creators who draw inspiration from him have “caught a spark” from him rather than attempting to replicate him entirely. While he’s pleased with the impact he’s made, he’s not keen on seeing others strive to mirror him precisely.
This year, Kojima shared that he stored a USB stick brimming with game concepts for future use after his passing. He affectionately called it his “will,” expressing his preference for Kojima Productions to keep creating fresh games and innovative ideas, rather than just replicating the ones he’s already developed.
In a forthcoming development, Hideo Kojima’s next venture, titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” will debut on PlayStation 5 on June 26th. Additionally, two other titles under his belt include “OD,” exclusive to Xbox, and the espionage-centric action game “Physint.” Beyond these projects, Kojima is also engaged in the A24 production of the Death Stranding film and has voiced a desire to direct his own feature film.
