The director of Resident Evil 2, Hideki Kamiya, has a rich history with Capcom, but he doesn’t express a desire to work on the Resident Evil series in the future. After directing RE2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami for Capcom (and its Clover Studio subsidiary), Kamiya moved on, co-founding PlatinumGames where he created Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101. In 2024, he left again to establish a new studio called Clovers Inc., focusing on developing an Okami sequel.
In the similar-sounding setting of Clovers Inc. (a name reminiscent of Clover Studio), there’s a possibility that Kamiya might revisit other Capcom projects. Since Capcom is releasing the sequel to Okami, it seems they are open to Kamiya continuing his work at his own studio. While Resident Evil may be unlikely, one of the franchises he wishes to rework again appears as feasible as Okami.
Hideki Kamiya Would Prefer Dino Crisis To Resident Evil
Capcom’s Other Survival Horror Classic
In a conversation on YouTube with MinnMax, Kamiya openly expressed his disinterest in revisiting the Resident Evil series by saying “Nah” when asked about directing another Resident Evil game. While the quick-paced interview might explain the brevity of his response, it’s still uncommon for him to be so succinct. His preference could be due to his affinity towards the more lighthearted and lively games he has developed since, or it may stem from the challenges he faced with Resident Evil 2, which he also discussed in the same interview.
Regardless of the choice, it’s clear that Kamiya is more inclined towards the idea of working on Dino Crisis rather than Resident Evil. When queried about Capcom’s other survival horror masterpiece, he expressed a desire to take it on, saying he’d “really enjoy giving it a try“. If Dino Crisis were to be revived in 2025 or beyond, it might offer more creative leeway than Resident Evil, given that the former has been on hiatus for many years instead of consistently evolving its narrative. The prospect of its comeback would undoubtedly excite many fans, and having the director of RE2 at the helm could be one of the more enticing possibilities.
Kamiya Wants To Return To His Personal Capcom Hits
Devil May Cry & Viewtiful Joe Have Iconic Legacies
Apart from Resident Evil, it appears that Kamiya is keen on revisiting some of his iconic Capcom titles. This is suggested by the upcoming Okami game and his mention in a MinnMax interview about having an idea for Viewtiful Joe 3. He also spoke about remaking Devil May Cry in a Hideki Kamiya Channel video on YouTube, as reported by GamesRadar. In response to a fan’s comment about a potential remake, Kamiya expressed his enthusiasm saying, “of course I’d love to do that,” before discussing the outdated design aspects he could modernize from scratch.
In his video finale, Kamiya politely asks Capcom to entrust him with a remake of Devil May Cry and a new Viewtiful Joe game – quite a contrast to his earlier dismissive attitude towards reworking Resident Evil. However, whether these wishes become reality could hinge on the success of Kamiya’s latest Okami project. Given the usual development timeline, it seems unlikely that fans will get their hands on either title anytime soon.
It appears less plausible to me that Capcom would give control of a Devil May Cry remake to Kamiya, especially since he’s not currently employed by them. Although he created the series, Devil May Cry has been managed by others within Capcom for quite some time and remains a significant part of their game collection. In contrast, Viewtiful Joe is more synonymous with Kamiya as the creator than it is with Capcom as a whole. If Capcom ever decides to produce a new installment in this cult classic series, it seems probable that Kamiya would be involved.
It’s great to see that Kamiya has successfully started a new Okami project, something I wouldn’t have anticipated a few years back. Kamiya’s unique ability to create flowing, stylish action sequences is hard to match in the industry, and I might even concur with him that his skills could be utilized more effectively on Capcom projects other than another Resident Evil game.
