He significantly contributes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portraying Loki. Yet, when not gracing the screens of the MCU, he was seen alongside fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe stars Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson in a movie from the MonsterVerse.
Released in 2017, this film was the second part of the MonsterVerse and a fresh start for the King Kong series as the 11th installment. It introduced a Titan character who later became a significant figure in the 2021 clash between Godzilla and Kong. Now, this critically and commercially acclaimed movie is moving to a new streaming platform and will be accessible for free starting from June 1.
The MonsterVerse series began in 2014, introducing Godzilla as its first monster. Later on, Kong joined the scene. The film was helmed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, with a screenplay penned by Dan Gilroy, Max Borenstein, and Derek Connolly.
In addition to Hiddleston, Kong: Skull Island boasted the presence of two other Marvel Cinematic Universe actors: Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson as photojournalist Mason Weaver. Also starring were John Goodman, Jing Tian, Toby Kebbell, John Ortiz, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Shea Whigham, Thomas Mann, Terry Notary, and John C. Reilly.
In the year 1973, we find ourselves on an expedition to the unexplored Skull Island, where a group consisting of scientists and Vietnam War veterans encounter Kong, one of the remaining colossal apes, along with other fearsome beasts lurking within.
The film was both critically acclaimed and financially profitable, earning high praise from critics and audiences alike. It currently holds a 76% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an audience score of 70% on Popcornmeter. “Kong: Skull Island” raked in a total of $568.6 million globally against a production budget of $185 million, with additional earnings of $40.1 million from DVD and Blu-ray sales. The MonsterVerse Continues
After “Kong: Skull Island,” a standalone Godzilla film titled “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” was released in 2019, preceding Kong’s appearance. The series then progressed to “Godzilla vs. Kong,” with Adam Wingard directing. In 2024, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” is set to continue the storyline, also under Wingard’s direction. The Godzilla and Kong franchise shows no signs of wrapping up just yet.
A new movie from the MonsterVerse series is currently being produced, and not too long ago, the title was revealed along with a sneak peek trailer. The short clip features a Monarch call center environment, followed by one of the computers displaying an emergency alert for a Titan sighting.
In the upcoming movie, Grant Sputore is set to direct, while David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green are responsible for the script. This is the sixth installment of the franchise, with Dan Stevens reprising his role as Trapper. The cast also includes Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, Matthew Modine, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Sam Neill. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is set to debut on March 26, 2027.
Kong: Skull Island will head to Tubi on June 1.
