Hi-Fi Rush Dev Tango Gameworks Acquired By PUBG Publisher Krafton

As a die-hard fan of Tango Gameworks and their groundbreaking titles, I must say that this news has my heart racing with excitement! It feels like a second wind for the studio that brought us masterpieces like The Evil Within series and Ghostwire: Tokyo. I was devastated when they shut down earlier this year, but now, seeing them rise again under Krafton’s wing is nothing short of miraculous.

After Microsoft stunned everyone by announcing Tango Gameworks’ shutdown in May 2024, there will be a renewal for the Japanese studio as it has been bought out. This news was shared in an official statement from Krafton over the weekend, revealing that the Japanese studio will have another chance at life following a “strategic partnership” they made with Microsoft.

Under this fresh agreement between Krafton and Microsoft, the PUBG publisher is set to obtain the studio and publishing rights for their hit rhythm action game, Hi-Fi Rush. This move grants the studio the freedom to carry on developing the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property. The publisher aims to foster the development team by giving them the opportunity to delve into future projects.

…and this is how it continues.

We’re back, baby!

In 2021, Tango Gameworks joined the Xbox Games Studios family when ZeniMax Media, Bethesda’s parent company, was purchased. This move included a collection of remarkable game titles from Tango, including The Evil Within series and Ghostwire: Tokyo, which debuted in 2022. Upon releasing Hi-Fi Rush in 2023 for Xbox consoles and Xbox Game Pass, the studio significantly boosted Xbox’s success. This game was later made available on PlayStation consoles in March 2024.

Approximately four months down the line, Microsoft opted to close the studio due to a strategic shift towards “priority projects,” resulting in the closure of studios like Alpha Dog (Mighty DOOM), Arkane Austin (Redfall), Roundhouse Games, and Tango Gameworks. However, it’s important to note that this move is not expected to influence the current game library of The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, Ghostwire: Tokyo, or the original Hi-Fi RUSH title, as confirmed by Krafton.

By integrating Tango Gameworks, Krafton underscores its commitment to broadening its worldwide reach and enriching its collection with cutting-edge and premium content. This move serves as a tactical fit with Krafton’s goal to pioneer the limits of digital entertainment.
