“He's Trying to Be Polite”. Alyson Hannigan Hated Filming Kissing Scenes with Jason Segel in How I Met Your Mother

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching sitcoms, I can attest that the chemistry between Lily and Marshall in How I Met Your Mother was undeniably captivating. However, being privy to Alyson Hannigan’s candid confession about her dislike for cigarette smoke during their kissing scenes has added an unexpected layer of reality to their on-screen relationship.

In the hit series “How I Met Your Mother,” Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel portrayed the beloved couple Lily and Marshall. Although their on-screen affection and chemistry were palpable, it’s worth noting that not every scene depicting their marriage was easy or enjoyable for these real-life friends to act out.

As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of Amy Sedaris, I’d say during an interview with DigitalSpy, I admitted there was an issue with our on-screen smooching moments. You see, Joe Lo Truglio, my co-star, was a heavy smoker, and I just couldn’t stand the smell of cigarettes. That made sharing kisses with him quite a challenge for me.

I cannot stand cigarette smoke. It’s like kissing an ashtray and he’s trying to be polite by having gum or mints, but it doesn’t help.

Segel didn’t just stop at chewing gum or mints; his desire to quit extended to his acting career as well. He sought help from his TV show partner to achieve this goal. However, Hannigan shared that it was challenging, but for a while, he managed to quit. Unfortunately, in the end, Jonah Hill, who played Marshall, resumed smoking and there was nothing they could do to prevent it.

Initially, during the show’s trial run, he made an offer: “Help me kick the habit of smoking, and I’ll be your closest ally.” We took him up on that, setting a wager where he would owe me $10 for each cigarette he smoked. By the end of the first day, he owed me $200. True to his word, he declared, “I’m quitting,” and he did, abstaining for almost a year. It was amazing, but eventually, under pressure, he resumed smoking again.

Regardless of the challenges arising from Segel’s addiction, the actors portrayed a convincing couple on screen. Off camera, they demonstrated a strong bond as Hannigan attempted to aid her TV spouse in overcoming his issue, though ultimately they were unable to find a lasting solution. Still, it’s worth noting that Segel went to great lengths to ensure his on-screen wife felt at ease.
