As a gamer who’s spent countless hours binge-watching Seinfeld, I can’t help but empathize with Jason Alexander‘s character George Costanza, albeit in a different context. Much like how George often found himself on the sidelines of his friends’ lives, Jason too seemed to be missing from an episode that was supposed to be about friendship.
The show Seinfeld followed a close-knit circle of friends, and throughout its seasons, we got to know their stories intimately. Since it was a TV series about a group, the main actors felt their roles were equally important. However, one actress was taken aback when she discovered she wasn’t featured in an episode during season 3.
In the episode titled “The Pen“, Jason Alexander was absent, which led to him becoming so upset that he considered quitting. This anger was mentioned by Michael Richards, who too was not featured in this specific episode, in his autobiography “Entrances and Exits” (as reported by Page Six).
However, Jason becomes enraged upon discovering he’s not included in the episode as well. He had entered the show with unparalleled self-assurance, having won a Tony Award on the New York stage – an accomplishment not to be underestimated. Until the rehearsal for “The Pen,” Jason had believed that Seinfeld was essentially a buddy series, centered around him and Jerry. But the entertainment industry can foster both inflated egos and deep insecurities, and this episode serves as one of those humbling reminders.
The incident involving Richard isn’t exclusive to his biography; it’s also detailed in the book “Seinfeldia: How a Show About Nothing Changed Everything.” In this work, it’s noted that Alexander expressed his displeasure to head screenwriter Larry David, stating that if they were to exclude him from the show, they should remove him entirely from the TV series. However, David attempted to discuss the matter with Alexander, but he was unyielding about the challenges of incorporating stories for all characters in a single episode.
Don’t tell me your problems. If you don’t need me here, I don’t want to be here.
Over time, Alexander came to understand his error, and during a chat with Access Hollywood, he expressed his gratitude towards David for disregarding his advice and not dismissing him.
Thank God he didn’t say “Take a hike,” because I would have had no life and no career.
Despite the potential disaster of a single outburst, Alexander’s acting career on Seinfeld miraculously survived and even lasted through Season 9.
