Since Borderlands 4 came out last week on PC, many players have complained that it runs poorly and is unstable. Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, has responded to this criticism. While the game is challenging to run smoothly even on powerful computers, a few adjustments could significantly improve performance.
Borderlands 4 is built on Unreal Engine 5, which has faced criticism for performance problems. The game uses the engine’s most demanding settings, leading to similar issues. Hardware Unboxed has tested all the game’s settings and found ways to improve performance. The biggest improvement comes from lowering the lighting settings, which reduces the strain from Unreal Engine 5’s ray tracing. Their tests show that the difference between the ‘Very High’ and ‘Medium’ settings is often barely noticeable, especially given the game’s art style, while performance can jump by over 25% compared to the highest settings.
While things like shadow and cloud quality offer smaller boosts, combining these adjustments can significantly improve performance. Using the settings we recommend can increase your average frame rate by over 50% without drastically changing how the game looks – potentially turning frustratingly choppy gameplay into a smooth experience. It’s unlikely the developers will completely fix the core performance issues of the game engine, but they could reduce stuttering by optimizing how shaders load and further refine the graphics options available to players, bringing overall performance to a more acceptable level.
Borderlands 4 continues the series’ tradition of fast-paced, first-person shooting and rewarding loot collection. However, while the gameplay is solid, it doesn’t quite capture the same level of humor that fans have come to expect. In a review for TopMob, editor Jordan Ramée gave the game a 7 out of 10, stating that it delivers on the core experience of finding loot, building character setups, and creating chaos.
