It’s been officially verified by a former PlayStation executive that the PlayStation 2 holds the record as the highest-selling video game console ever made.
On Twitter, an image circulated of a PlayStation 2 console with phrases engraved on it. It reads, “In tribute to PS2’s final production. Manufactured 160,636, 885 units between January 2000 and March 2013.” Users doubted its authenticity until the former PlayStation president, Shawn Layden, confirmed it. He stated, “The image appears genuine. The production number is accurate as well.

Sony has shared that more than 160 million PlayStation 2 consoles have been sold globally, almost equaling the total number they manufactured. Not long ago, the production count for PlayStation 3 consoles was disclosed at 88,159,116 units. Additionally, Layden has also revealed the number of PSP handheld devices produced, which totals 82,523,607.
Although the PlayStation 2 holds the title of the best-selling console ever, Nintendo is not far behind, having sold over 146 million Switch units by November 2024. To mark PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, Sony is releasing special 30th anniversary editions of the PS5 consoles and accessories, as well as providing players with the opportunity to download limited-time retro themes for their PS5 systems.
