One key advantage of the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is its backward compatibility feature, allowing older Switch 1 games to be enhanced. Since the original Switch has hosted a multitude of RPGs over time, some with technical glitches, I’m intrigued about how popular RPG series would perform on the Switch 2. In my inaugural article focusing on RPGs on the updated Switch, I’ll delve into the Tales of franchise by examining Tales of Graces f Remastered, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, and Tales of Symphonia Remastered.
In this upcoming collection of articles, I will delve into possible enhancements to graphics, frame rates, and load times for games on both the Nintendo Switch OLED and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, I’ll explore my expectations for each game regarding future upgrades or patches. I’ve played all the following games with their most recent updates.
How does Tales of Graces f Remastered run on Nintendo Switch 2?
In my previous write-up discussing Tales of Graces f Remastered available on Steam and Switch, I expressed my disappointment that the Switch version, running at a constant 30fps, didn’t live up to its original release due to better performance. However, in the new version for Switch 2, the game’s performance remains largely unchanged. Although there may have been improvements in latency, it wasn’t significant enough for me to notice during my testing, whether docked or handheld. One area where Tales of Graces f Remastered on Switch 2 truly shines is its significantly faster load times, as demonstrated by the results I’ve provided below.
Testing condition | Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
Console dashboard to game title screen | 18-20 seconds | 8 seconds |
Loading a save from title screen to in-game | 7 seconds | 4 seconds |
Although Tales of Graces f Remastered experiences smoother load times on the current version, it would significantly benefit from an enhanced Nintendo Switch 2 Edition or a backward compatibility update to increase the frame rate and potentially enhance its visuals, as it currently retains the same appearance as it did on the original Switch.
What we want from a Tales of Graces f Remastered Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade
A dream scenario would be an enhanced version of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster for the hypothetical Switch 2, similar to Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, upgraded from 720p 30fps and 1080p 30fps to 1080p 60fps and 1440p 60fps if possible. At present, there’s no news regarding a potential Switch 2 upgrade or update. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for an announcement about Tales of Graces f Remastered on the hypothetical Switch 2 following its recent release.
How does Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition run on Nintendo Switch 2?
Definitive Edition before its official release on both Xbox One X and Nintendo Switch. At first, the gameplay was quite choppy on the Nintendo Switch, but that changed after the day one update. However, even with the updates, it didn’t provide a smooth experience on Nintendo’s console due to unstable performance in various scenarios and visuals that were either lower quality or slightly blurry, depending on whether I played it docked or handheld.

On the new Nintendo Switch, the performance of Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition significantly enhances, consistently reaching 60 frames per second in all tested areas. Previously on Switch, the game had noticeable lagging and rarely reached 60fps. Although there’s a slight improvement in load times, it’s not substantial.
Testing condition | Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
Console dashboard to game title screen | 30 seconds | 22 seconds |
Loading a save from title screen to in-game | 6-7 seconds | 5 seconds |
What we want from a Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that I wasn’t hoping for an update given the game’s age, but if there was one, it would have been fantastic to enhance the visual quality across the board. The game performs smoothly as it is, but a crisp 1080p handheld mode and either 1440p or 4K docked experience would have made it truly remarkable. Unfortunately, even on the original Switch, the image quality seems less than 720p due to its softness.
How does Tales of Symphonia Remastered run on Nintendo Switch 2?
The remastered version of Tales of Symphonia didn’t impress much on the Nintendo Switch, and it’s not expected to do so on the hypothetical Switch 2 either. Load times remain nearly unchanged, and playing the game from internal storage doesn’t offer a significantly different experience compared to the original Switch version. For comparison, I’ve added my load time test results in the following games.
Testing condition | Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
Console dashboard to game title screen | 18 seconds | 17 seconds |
Loading a save from title screen to in-game | 4 seconds | 3 seconds |

What we want from a Tales of Symphonia Remastered Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade
Currently, it seems impossible to salvage this release as it started off poorly. For Tales of Symphonia, I hope they make the original version accessible through the Nintendo GameCube app on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for subscribers. Since Bandai Namco Entertainment’s SoulCalibur II is already there, it’s plausible that this could happen even though a remaster is already available.
