Hercules live-action remake sparks “creative tensions” between Russo brothers and Disney

Regarding Hercules, it seems they’re referring to him as “Hunkules” among themselves. However, according to reports, the Russo brothers aren’t planning on calling their live-action remake either of those names, which might be leading to some disagreement with Disney about the project’s title, hence the “creative tension”.

Since their blockbuster hits with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Russo brothers have had a more subdued period (ignoring The Electric State for now). They’re set to return to Marvel with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, but those projects are still a few years away.

It was announced that Disney would be releasing a live-action version of [the film] in 2022, with Guy Ritchie originally set to direct. However, for an unknown cause, that plan didn’t work out and it was the Russos who stepped up to take charge instead.

Since the filming of Doomsday is ongoing, it might take some time before the Hercules remake starts rolling, and that’s not all – due to the presence of “creative tension,” there could be additional complications as well.

Russo brothers Hercules live-action take causes “creative tension” with Disney

Rest easy! The live-action Hercules film is yet to be fully developed. However, as reported by Hollywood insider DanielRPK, the director duo are considering a change in approach. There have been whispers of creative disagreements, with the Russos expressing interest in focusing on the original movie’s antagonist, Hades, instead.

It’s been suggested that they might alter the title to Hades, mirroring previous Maleficent films instead of a live-action retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Yet, it seems Disney is more inclined towards creating a true-to-life adaptation of the 1997 animated classic instead.

Although it’s uncertain if these tensions are valid or not, it’s equally unclear if any agreement has been reached by either party. The last public announcement indicated that the Russos were still awaiting a script, with Dave Callaham of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings slated to write when the project initially surfaced online in 2020. Whether this arrangement still stands is yet to be determined.

Following the release of Snow White starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, it was thought that Disney might halt its live-action adaptations due to problems with Mufasa: The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. But the strong box office performance of Lilo & Stitch, which is still relatively new, could potentially alter this trend.

As a diehard Disney fan, I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next wave of live-action adaptations like Cruella 2, The Jungle Book 2, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Aristocrats. Unfortunately, it seems these exciting projects have hit a temporary roadblock, with no clear release dates on the horizon.
