The Sanrio theme park in Oita, Japan is getting a big makeover, and developers promise it will become a high-end resort filled with Hello Kitty and all her character friends.
Hello Kitty has been a beloved part of popular culture since her debut in the 1970s. She became incredibly popular in the late 80s and early 90s, leading to animated series, tons of products, and even two theme parks built in her honor.
Many Sanrio fans know Puroland, the indoor theme park in Tokyo celebrating the brand’s cute characters. Sanrio also has an outdoor park called Harmonyland in Oita Prefecture, offering fun rides for families, including a Ferris wheel, carousel, and gentle roller coasters.
The theme park is undergoing major renovations to transform it from a traditional amusement park into a peaceful, elevated resort.

Hello Kitty park to be transformed into luxury resort
According to Japanese news reports, Harmonyland theme park will be renamed Park in the Sky on December 8, 2025. The park will be reimagined as a mountaintop resort in the clouds, taking advantage of its scenic location.
The existing funfair will be expanded with new features like a large, covered area to protect against bad weather, ropeways and electric vehicles for easy travel between the mountains and the park, and hotels offering beautiful views of the surrounding scenery.

At a December 8th event, developers shared their vision to blend the charm of Sanrio characters with the beautiful hot springs and landscapes of Oita.
Sanrio Entertainment wants to build a resort that feels like the most welcoming place on Earth. According to President Aya Komaki, they’ll be gathering ideas from people worldwide – both in Japan and internationally – using the concept of ‘heaven’ as inspiration, to create a space everyone will love.

There’s currently no confirmed opening date for the ‘Park in the Sky,’ but it’s one of the many new and exciting theme parks being developed in Japan.
A real-life Pokemon park, called PokePark Kanto, is planned to open in spring 2026. Visitors can explore a town with shops and attractions, and even go on a nature walk where they can ‘catch’ Pokemon. The nature walk will be a bit challenging, though – visitors will need to pass a fitness test to make sure they’re ready for hills, tunnels, and uneven ground.
