Helen Mirren Doesn’t Want to See a Female James Bond: The Character ‘Is Drenched and Born Out of Profound Sexism’

In preparation for Amazon’s revamp of the James Bond franchise, Helen Mirren has expressed her disapproval towards the original series due to its portrayal of women. Although the idea of a female actor assuming the role of 007 has been discussed in Hollywood for quite some time, Mirren has no desire to witness such a casting choice, citing the character’s historical background as the reason.

Dame Judi Dench, in a recent interview with The Standard, expressed her disdain for the James Bond series. She never found the franchise appealing and took issue with how women were portrayed in it. According to Dench, the James Bond concept is deeply rooted in sexism. Instead, she prefers telling true stories about courageous women who have worked in the secret service, citing their bravery, particularly during the French Resistance.”

Or more casually:

“In a chat with The Standard, Dame Judi Dench shared her feelings about the James Bond series – it’s just not her cup of tea. She didn’t vibe with it and felt uncomfortable with how women were depicted. Dench believes that the foundation of James Bond is sexist. Instead, she wants to share stories about real-life heroines who worked in secret services, highlighting their incredible bravery during events like the French Resistance.

Currently, Mirren is teaming up with a past James Bond actor in the latest Paramount+ crime series titled “MobLand.” In this show, Tom Hardy plays a fixer and Pierce Brosnan portrays the husband of Mirren’s gang leader. Although Mirren has her own thoughts about the 007 series, she offered warm compliments for Brosnan in an interview with The Standard.

Mirren expressed her deep admiration for Pierce Brosnan, stating that she’s an enormous fan of his. She acknowledged his good looks and praised his performance in ‘MobLand’. However, it’s not just his acting skills that impress her; she also considers him one of the kindest individuals she’s ever worked with. Similarly, she spoke highly of Daniel Craig, whom she has met and knows a bit. Once again, she finds him to be a very kind and gracious person.

Currently, the James Bond series is experiencing significant transformations. In February, Amazon and MGM finalized an agreement that gives them creative control over the franchise. Previously, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, who have long been involved in its production, will now hand over supervision to Amazon.
