As a seasoned movie critic who has had the pleasure of watching countless adaptations of literary classics, I must say that the casting of Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff in the upcoming Wuthering Heights adaptation by Emerald Fennell is an intriguing choice.
It appears quite plausible that when Kate Bush was deeply influenced by Emily Brontë’s gothic novel “Wuthering Heights,” and wrote her song as a response, she might have envisioned a towering figure of Australian masculinity. However, this is merely speculation. The upcoming adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” directed by Emerald Fennell casts Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff, but not everyone finds this choice to be delightful. Critic Roxana Hadadi expresses her doubts about Elordi’s ability to portray the complex emotions, insanity, cruelty, and obsessive love of Heathcliff. Similarly, writer Rose Dommu tweeted that she feels like walking into traffic upon hearing the news. Both comments convey a similar sentiment.
In the movie, Margot Robbie, hailing from Australia like him, teams up. She’s set to portray Catherine in this production. If one had doubts that Emerald Fennell would bypass a chance to establish a film at an English castle, they might as well predict this remake to unfold Down Under. In this alternate version, Heathcliff would greet with the Aussie slang “G’day, mate.” The movie will be spearheaded by LuckyChap, Margot Robbie’s production house, which previously produced Fennell’s works such as Saltburn and Promising Young Woman. By now, it’s evident why Bowen Yang hasn’t been recruited for the project.
