Val Kilmer, star of Top Gun and Batman Forever, died at age 65 on April 2, 2025.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed by his daughter that the actor succumbed to pneumonia in Los Angeles. Back in 2014, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, but remarkably, he managed to make a full recovery.
The impact of Kilmer’s career is encapsulated by his memorable performances in some of the most significant films from the ’80s and ’90s, such as Top Gun (and its recent sequel, Top Gun: Maverick), Batman Forever, and Tombstone.
If you’re interested in honoring the star’s life and accomplishments, consider watching some of his top films in the near future. However, a unique documentary, penned and directed by Kilmer himself, is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video right now.
Val documentary is narrated by Jack Kilmer
In 2021, the film titled Val, which was jointly created by A24 and distributed by Amazon Studios, hit the screens. The movie boasts more than 800 hours of archive footage that belongs to Kilmer. This collection includes video clips from his childhood, school days, as well as his early acting career.
For decades, the video footage lay undisturbed, but after receiving a cancer diagnosis in 2014, Kilmer felt compelled to share the account of his life experiences.
Due to his health condition and tracheotomy surgery, Kilmer found he could no longer speak fluently. In turn, he penned the script for a documentary that was narrated by his son Jack.
Additionally, the documentary includes exclusive backstage footage from Kilmer’s films, featuring his well-known fellow actors.
Since Kilmer’s death was announced, fellow actors and filmmakers have come forward to pay tribute.
Michael Mann, the director of Heat, often admired the versatility and depth of Val’s character while they worked together on the film. Over the course of many years, Val fought illness and kept his spirit alive. It’s incredibly unfortunate to learn about this sad news regarding Val’s health.
Josh Brolin shared on Instagram: “Goodbye for now, friend. I’ll surely miss you. You were intelligent, thought-provoking, courageous, and incredibly creative – a rare spark. Few are like you. I hope to meet you again among the stars when my time comes. Until then, I cherish the wonderful memories and kind thoughts.
