‘He Was Too Big A Piece Of Meat.’ I Get There Are Challenges To Using Darth Vader And The Emperor On Andor, But Can We All Admit It Would Be Cool?

In full flow now, Andor Season 2 is captivating viewers, even with just three episodes out so far. The grandeur of this season is noticeably increased as we race to catch up with the storyline presented in Rogue One. With the initial set of episodes aired and reactions pouring in positively, showrunner Tony Gilroy shed some light on fan queries, also discussing characters that won’t feature, and the reasons behind their absence. Despite the logical reasoning, it’s hard not to wish Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine had made an appearance!

During an interview with Rolling Stone, Gilroy was questioned about whether the series “Andor” plans to feature any of the mentioned Sith Lords. In straightforward terms, he responded affirmatively, indicating that indeed, they may be included in the show.

“No, it wasn’t something I had planned.”

Writing for Darth Vader can be quite restrictive. I’ve given it a try, but he doesn’t have much to express.

Given that he was among the writers for “Rogue One”, his involvement sheds some light on Vader’s brief appearances. As for speculation about Emperor Palpatine potentially appearing in “Andor”, Gilroy provided another straightforward answer:

He was too large a burden for me to handle; it was simply too much for me to carry. At one time, I considered taking it on, but it proved to be too much of a burden.

Indeed, that’s a reasonable observation you’ve made. As we edge closer to the launch of Andor Season 2, there have been subtle hints and winks from Gilroy and the cast, giving us a sneak peek into the characters we can expect. We already knew that Mon Mothma would face some tough times in the upcoming season, and it’s no secret that Orson Krennic will make a comeback.

However, regarding the question of who exactly we won’t encounter, Palpatine and Darth Vader are not expected to appear, contrary to the fact that we did catch a glimpse of Vader in Rogue One. This is according to Gilroy’s statement:

“Despite the appearance of Darth Vader in Rogue One, we won’t be seeing either Palpatine or Vader in our movie.

One intriguing discovery I made when our series began is that there are billions of creatures scattered across the galaxy. Few are aware of the Jedi or the Sith. Only a minuscule portion of people have even heard a whisper about it. It’s not part of their culture, and I was taken aback when I learned this. I assumed everyone knew about it, but it turns out that it’s incredibly secretive and obscure.

During the interview, it’s worth noting that unlike other space-themed series such as “Andor“, the narrative isn’t centered around mystical space wizards with glowing swords. Instead, it draws parallels to epic Russian literature like “War and Peace“. The story unfolds by delving into the hardships faced by ordinary people who are caught in the tumultuous conflicts of the Empire.

In terms of Rogue One, envisioning another scene where only Vader’s menacing red glow is visible before he attacks a group of Rebels might be thrilling, but it doesn’t quite fit within the context of Andor. The allure of this series lies in its unique narrative, as it steers away from the typical battles between the Light and Dark sides of the Force. For many inhabitants of the galaxy, their understanding of these cosmic forces is limited. This aspect was acknowledged by Gilroy during production.

Gilroy consistently emphasizes on crafting a narrative that’s authentic and earthbound, steering clear from the extravagant exploits often associated with the Jedi and Sith. This is evident in the restrained inclusion of aliens in the series, an aspect Gilroy tends to be somewhat cautious about.

Indeed, it would be exciting to have Vader and Palpatine appear in Andor, but I get why they’re not there. They simply don’t play significant roles in this particular narrative, and their impact is stronger in series like Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, that doesn’t make them insignificant in a show like Andor.
