As a seasoned connoisseur of cinematic art, I must admit that I’ve had the privilege of witnessing some truly extraordinary performances throughout my years. Yet, even legends like Marlon Brando have had their off days, or perhaps in this case, off movies.
Marlon Brando is often hailed as a legendary actor, yet it’s worth noting that even someone as esteemed as him might have delivered subpar performances at times. One such instance was highlighted by Anthony Hopkins in an interview with About Film, where he emphasized the importance of the training actors receive for our profession and mentioned this less-than-stellar performance.
Hopkins emphasized the significance of shedding some acting habits that actors often acquire. He noted that training is beneficial, but over-reliance on these habits, which serve as a protective mechanism during performance, can lead to monotonous performances. During his explanation, he referenced Marlon Brando as an example.
It’s quite likely that this practice will prove beneficial, much like any form of training. As you continue learning and practicing, your skills will undoubtedly improve. I remember reading an interview with Kenneth Tynan from the ’60s where he discussed mannerisms. He stated, “We tend to develop certain mannerisms and habits that give us a sense of comfort.” He further added, “The challenge is to break free from these as much as possible.” It may be difficult, but the effort is worthwhile because it allows you to shed old behaviors—and everyone has them. You notice them in films. Sometimes they’re captivating and charismatic, but at other times, they can seem rather foolish.
Hopkins pointed out the Brando’s performance, which he himself considers simply “bad.”
In a film last night, I watched the legendary Marlon Brando, yet his performance was dreadful. It seemed almost blasphemous to criticize him, but it left me perplexed – “How could he be this bad?” It was a film called “Morituri” with Yul Brenner. I wondered why he was acting so poorly. “Come on,” I thought, “Get into character! Show some emotion!” However, even the best actors can have off days and deliver poor performances. That’s alright, though.
Morituri, as Hopkins refers to it, is a war film directed by Bernhard Wicki. The plot revolves around a man coerced into impersonating an SS officer and disarming explosives on a ship scheduled for capture by the Allies. Critics and audiences alike have praised this movie, but some reviewers seem to diverge from Hopkins’ viewpoint, as he was quite critical of Brando’s portrayal in the film.
