“He was about to take over the world.” Jim Carrey regrets that he was “stupid enough” to reject the director, who was later nominated for an Oscar

Actors often find themselves regretting roles they didn’t take and directors they never worked with. Unlike others, Jim Carrey harbors a lingering regret over passing up an opportunity to collaborate with a director who eventually started receiving Academy Award nominations.

When it was time to select a director for the sequel of “Ace Ventura:” “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls“, Jim Carrey elected to offer Steve Oedekerk, who had previously contributed as a script consultant on the initial film and penned the sequel, an opportunity. For Carrey, he felt that Oedekirk was the ideal candidate given their prior acquaintance and his confidence in a seamless collaboration. This choice allowed him to maintain the creative freedom he valued while acting on camera.

Prior to selecting Oedekerk, Carrey had an alternative proposal. At the time, Spike Jonze, who was renowned for his music videos, pitched his concept for the project. Although he found it intriguing, Carrey, not being acquainted with him or his work, declined his offer. This decision meant that he would later miss out on collaborating with a future acclaimed and esteemed talent (as reported by Vulture).

Initially, I underestimated him by declining his offer to direct “Ace 2”, as I wasn’t familiar with his work at the time. However, he walked in and presented a variety of impressive ideas, and it turned out that he was on the verge of becoming a global phenomenon – something I hadn’t realized. Caught off guard, I said, “I’m not sure, this is a new face.” Ever since then, I’ve been regretting my decision.

Instead, Spike Jonze shifted his attention to various other projects. A few years later, he was recognized with an Oscar nomination for the film “Being John Malkovich“. Further nominations and accolades came his way, including a win in the best screenwriter category for the 2013 release, “Her“.

Eventually, Jim Carrey came to regret his choice, as he later discovered the exceptional talent of director Spike Jonze, whom he had passed up on an opportunity to work with due to underestimating his abilities earlier. However, at a time when both directors were newcomers yet to make a feature film, Carrey opted to back someone he was familiar with instead.
