Although Ryan Reynolds is widely recognized for his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the movie series, since October 2022, he has been engaged in a documentary film project about the life of the late comedian John Candy. This project is being developed under Reynold’s Maximum Effort production company. Notably, Tom Hanks’ father also starred alongside Candy in the 1984 film “Splash.
This week, as mentioned earlier, Reynolds discussed the documentary during an interview on “Colbert”. He stated, “I get to meet heroes.” Specifically, there were approximately eight to ten individuals who greatly influenced their generation, and it’s delightful to converse with storytellers about a remarkable man, who was himself a gifted storyteller. Tragically, this man passed away at the young age of 43.
Although Candy passed away in 1994 due to a heart attack, he had already left a lasting impression in films such as Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Uncle Buck, Cool Runnings, and Rookie of the Year, which he starred in before his demise.
โHe Was a Good Personโ
Reynolds stated, ‘He was incredibly giving towards others, and he remained kind even when no one was looking. I believe this quality is truly significant.’
In October 2022, Reynolds revealed plans for a John Candy documentary, expressing his affection by saying, “Given the current surge of interest in John Candy, I can’t help but say that I adore him. Maximum Effort and Colin Hanks are currently working on a film about his life. Get ready for tears.” Jennifer Candy-Sullivan, John Candy’s daughter, enthusiastically confirmed the news, stating, “Excited about collaborating with them and our family on this project! This endeavor is in capable hands.
In 2019, Reynolds honored Candy on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of his passing. He penned down a tribute to a comedic genius and national icon from Canada. If you haven’t seen much of his work, he recommended taking a look at his films. He considered him as a valuable treasure.
Cool Runnings Actors Praise Candy
32 years ago, when Cool Runnings first hit the screens, actor Malik Yoba revealed an interesting tidbit about its initial concept. Originally, it was intended to be a dramatic film, but things changed once Candy joined the project. “It was a serious movie for him,” Yoba explained. “He’s known for comedy, and in this role, he got to play something very serious.” Essentially, Yoba shared that the movie, inspired by Jamaica’s first national bobsled team, originally had a much more somber tone, but was later transformed into a comedy.

“A Very Sweet Man”
Rawle D. Lewis, known from Cool Runnings, commented, “I believed he was incredibly kind.” He shared that he had anticipated encountering a Hollywood star, but instead found an ordinary individual. Lewis continued, “His empathy, his kindness, he was simply such a wonderful person.” Yoba concurred, “He was a very kind and attractive man, generous, just a fantastic companion to be around. Here’s the thing: He seemed genuinely delighted to be part of this film. Indeed, because it was a unique project for him,” he said.
You can stream the movie “Cool Runnings” on Disney+. As for the John Candy documentary, titled yet unknown by Reynolds and Hanks, it’s currently being produced according to IMDb listings.
