Although Game of Thrones was an enormous success that seemed impossible to surpass, HBO’s upcoming fantasy series is expected to be even more popular. It’s hard to believe it’s been over fifteen years since Game of Thrones first aired and dramatically changed the landscape of television.
I was absolutely thrilled when Game of Thrones took off! It wasn’t just a hit show for me, it really changed things. Seeing how successful that mature, gritty fantasy series was led to spin-offs like House of the Dragon and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which were great. But more than that, it opened the door for so many other fantastic shows. I think Game of Thrones proved that adults want complex, mature fantasy, and now we’re getting amazing series like Outlander, Interview with a Vampire, and Castlevania because of it. It truly paved the way!
Shows like The Rings of Power, Arcane, and The Witcher benefited greatly from the massive success of Game of Thrones, which proved audiences wanted epic fantasy. Because of Game of Thrones‘ incredible impact, it seems unlikely another show will ever reach that same level of popularity. However, HBO’s new Harry Potter series could potentially be even more successful.
HBO’s Harry Potter Show Could Be As Big As Game of Thrones
As a critic, I have to say the first trailer for HBO’s Harry Potter series – reportedly one of the most costly TV ventures ever – absolutely exploded online. The reaction was immediate and intense, and it’s clear this isn’t just another adaptation. This reimagining of the beloved books feels like a genuine event, and I predict it’s going to be a huge hit for HBO – potentially even their next Game of Thrones.
HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series has a significant advantage over the 2011 Game of Thrones adaptation because it’s aimed at a broader audience, avoiding mature content. The immediate success of the behind-the-scenes documentary Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic – becoming the most-watched program on HBOMax – demonstrates the huge potential popularity of the new series.
HBO’s Harry Potter Series Still Faces Two Big Hurdles Game of Thrones Avoided
However, the new HBO Harry Potter series faces two significant challenges if it wants to become as popular as Game of Thrones. First, while George R.R. Martin is generally well-liked, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has faced criticism and calls for boycotts due to her controversial views on transgender issues. This creates a potential obstacle for the show’s success.
The Harry Potter books already have a well-known and successful movie franchise, while Game of Thrones first gained popularity through its television adaptation. Because of this, HBO’s new Harry Potter series will face the challenge of living up to both the existing familiarity of the story and the controversies surrounding its author if it hopes to surpass Game of Thrones and become the most popular fantasy TV show ever.
