As a dedicated gamer, I just wrapped up Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us, and it left me eagerly anticipating Season 3. It seems we’ll get to see things from Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) perspective on her initial day in Seattle. Unfortunately, no premiere date for Season 3 has been announced yet, but it looks like the show’s composer may have accidentally hinted that Season 4 is on the horizon!
In an interview for The Last of Us: Savage Starlight podcast (via GamesRadar), composer Jake Staley subtly suggested that a fourth season is likely: “I can confirm at least two more seasons, but that’s all I’ll reveal for now.
To put it simply, Craig Mazin, the showrunner, has stated that the intricate narrative he and his crew have conceived can only be adequately portrayed across a minimum of four seasons. In fact, he anticipates that Season 3 might extend beyond the length of Season 2.
In simpler terms, Mazin informed Collider that they won’t be able to wrap up the story in a third season for The Last of Us series. Instead, they are hoping to produce enough quality content to return and conclude it in a potential fourth season, as HBO management had previously suggested that the show might end after its fourth season.
To ensure a coherent and complete narrative for the show, it seems fitting to structure Seasons 2, 3, and 4 in that order. This setup would allow Abby’s storyline to be fully developed in Season 3, filling a gap from Season 2, and culminating in a satisfying fourth season. Unfortunately, as filming for Season 3 hasn’t begun yet, we might have to wait some time before it airs.
Fans of the show have grown accustomed to extended gaps between seasons, as Season 1 ended in March 2023 and Season 2 didn’t start until April 2025. If this pattern persists, fans might not see The Last of Us Season 3 until 2027. Meanwhile, gamers are still anticipating an announcement about Part 3 of the game series, which has yet to materialize, even five years later.
