HBO’s I Love LA Is Already a Streaming Hit 1 Day Later

HBO’s new comedy series premiered on November 2nd and quickly gained popularity on streaming platforms.

According to FlixPatrol, the new comedy I Love LA is currently seventh on HBO Max’s list of most popular shows in the United States. That’s impressive, especially considering it’s filling a slot previously held by Girls. However, I Love LA isn’t simply following in its footsteps – it’s a clever and insightful look at what it’s like to be young, driven, and constantly connected online today.

Rachel Sennott wrote, starred in, and created this film about a young woman working at a talent agency whose life starts to fall apart when her long-lost college best friend, Tallulah (Odessa A’zion), a popular influencer, unexpectedly shows up. Their complicated reconnection explores themes of striving for success, unhealthy reliance on others, and the search for approval in a world obsessed with social media.

The show also features Jordan Firstman as a celebrity stylist, True Whitaker as the daughter of a prominent Hollywood figure, and Josh Hutcherson as Maia’s boyfriend, Dylan – who offers an outside perspective on her hectic life. It’s clear why I Love L.A. is becoming popular so quickly. This time, the show focuses on the awkwardness of specific situations, but draws from the creator’s personal and complex experiences with Los Angeles.

Sennot described being put up in a North Hollywood studio apartment during a time of wildfires. She recalled the sky being a strange orange, gray, and brown color and jokingly thinking, ‘Here we come, L.A.!’ This blend of dark humor is a hallmark of her new show, I Love L.A. Despite initially dreaming of returning to New York, Sennot found that writing for the HBO series allowed her to transform her mixed feelings into something creative and personally healing.

I Love LA Is Also A Hit With Critics

Sennott explained she was searching for something constant in her life. She realized she’d been desperately trying to hold onto people, driven by a fear of being alone. This feeling is central to the story of Maia, which explores the anxiety of being left behind as others progress in their lives and careers. Directing the series allowed Sennott complete creative control, a natural step for someone who has always defined herself through her work.

The series revolves around Maia and her close-knit group of friends as they reconnect and deal with how their lives have changed during time apart, through pursuing their goals, and in new relationships. Critics have given I Love LA a very positive reception, as reflected by its high score on Rotten Tomatoes. While viewer ratings aren’t available yet, the show’s popularity on streaming platforms suggests audiences will likely enjoy it as well.

New episodes of I Love LA Season 1 air Sundays on HBO.
