The HBO adaptation of Harry Potter has officially selected its main trio – Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger – and appears to be addressing a significant issue from the movies, which was the limited representation of racial and ethnic diversity. Newcomers Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton are set to step into the roles previously held by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson.

The Harry Potter films, primarily based in England and Scotland and aired between 2000 and 2011, were occasionally criticized due to the predominantly white cast. A few actors of non-white descent appeared in minor roles with brief screen appearances, such as Kingsley Shacklebolt from the Ministry of Magic, students like Dean Thomas, Angelina Johnson, Parvati and Padma Patil, and Cho Chang.

It appears that the Harry Potter series is indeed supporting a report from Jeff Sneider, an entertainment insider, made in 2023, which suggested a push to have more characters of color cast in the adaptation. According to reports, Hermione and Severus Snape are among the roles under consideration for non-white actors, aligning with Warner Bros.’ potential commitment to this effort as seen in their recent casting decisions.

How Does the Harry Potter Series Cast Fix Potter’s Diversity Issues?

Stanton, whose ethnic background sparked widespread discussions online upon the announcement of her role, is primarily recognized for her lead performance in the West End production of Matilda The Musical from September 2023 to March 2024. She was selected to star alongside McLaughlin and Stout after a thorough casting process involving approximately 32,000 children aged 9 to 11 who auditioned for the main roles in the Harry Potter series.

The first audition notice underscored its dedication towards fair representation and diversity in casting, encouraging talent agents to “present skilled actors, irrespective of their ethnic background, sex, physical ability, skin color, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”

Francesca Gardiner, who is set to act as the showrunner and scriptwriter, along with director Mark Mylod, who have previously collaborated on the highly praised HBO series Succession, collectively announced the recent casting developments through a shared statement.

It appears that the push for diversity and inclusivity in casting has expanded, with British-Ghanaian actor Paapa Essiedu set to take on the role of the intricate and enigmatic Hogwarts professor Severus Snape, a character previously depicted by the late Alan Rickman.

The adaptation of Harry Potter on HBO seems to be deliberately aiming to portray a more diverse and representative wizarding world, as evidenced by the selection of Stanton and Essiedu for key roles. Previously announced cast members include John Lithgow playing Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell. However, a specific release date for the Harry Potter reboot within the 2026 timeframe has not been disclosed yet.

The Harry Potter Series Is Not the First Time a Non-White Actress Played Hermione

In the Harry Potter series, Stanton has been chosen to play Hermione, making it the ninth time this character is being played by an actress of non-white descent. Back in 2015, Noma Dumezweni, a South African-British actress, gained international attention when she first brought Hermione to life on stage in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child during its initial West End performance. She was later honored with the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Over the years, six other Black actresses have taken on the role of Hermione in various productions across the globe. These include Jenny Jules, Paula Arundell, Yanna McIntosh, Lily Mojekwu, Jillian Anthony, and Sarah Afful. In addition, Erica Luttrell, a Black Canadian actress, lent her voice to Hermione in the 2019 augmented reality game “Harry Potter: Wizards Unite”.

The Harry Potter series appears to be mirroring the approach taken by another well-known Young Adult book adaptation, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, in its choice of casting. This successful series, set to start filming its third season in July 2025, is known for selecting actors of color for many significant roles that were originally white in other adaptations or portrayals.

Unprecedented Challenges Loom Large For the Harry Potter Series

In 2026, HBO plans to unveil their new take on the Harry Potter series, an adaptation that is true to J.K. Rowling’s seven-book tale but also promises a unique perspective. This production aims to delve deeper into the intricate details of the original story while staying faithful to the cherished narrative.

Despite her role as an executive producer for the show, the author’s divisive stance on transgender issues – evident in her explicit transphobic comments – casts a troubling cloud over the production and the Wizarding World at large. This controversial behavior has sparked concerns among fans about the series’ true commitment to inclusivity.
