While services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video offer plenty of great shows, HBO originally defined high-quality television. They were creating addictive series like The Sopranos, The Wire, and Six Feet Under long before binge-watching became popular. Now, with HBO Max, they have a significant edge over other streaming platforms. HBO Max boasts a huge library of acclaimed dramas, massive hits like Game of Thrones, and unforgettable miniseries – think Chernobyl and Band of Brothers – making it ideal for a perfect weekend of watching.
HBO has always released its shows one episode per week, and they’ve continued that approach even with streaming. Popular shows like Euphoria, The Last of Us, and House of the Dragon follow this schedule. This strategy keeps viewers talking and engaged online, and encourages them to maintain their subscriptions. However, it can be annoying because shows like Euphoria, The White Lotus, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are so captivating that you immediately want to binge-watch the next episode after finishing one.
Unlike shows like Succession or Silicon Valley that are best enjoyed week by week, some HBO series are actually more enjoyable when you watch all the episodes consecutively. Barry, starring Bill Hader, is a great illustration – this darkly comedic thriller about a hitman trying to become an actor really shines when viewed as a complete story.
Barry Works Even Better As A Binge-Watch Than It Did As A Weekly Series
Honestly, when I first heard HBO was making a show with Bill Hader about a hitman trying to become an actor, I was really doubtful. It sounded like one of those ideas that might get a laugh in a quick SNL sketch, but I couldn’t imagine it lasting even half an hour, let alone a whole series. But then Barry premiered, and wow, was I wrong! Hader didn’t just lean into that weird concept; he used it to really dig into some dark stuff about what makes people tick and the psychological weight of taking lives. It sounds crazy when you explain it – a bit of a rambling, silly story – but the way it’s done… it’s a seriously deep character study, right up there with something like Breaking Bad.
Throughout its four seasons, the show Barry changed its style to match the increasingly complex story. While the first two seasons were a darkly funny action comedy with some intense moments, the later seasons became a full-blown psychological horror. Watching the entire series back-to-back really highlights this shift, making the gradual descent into darkness even more impactful.
Barry Proved Bill Hader Is One Of The Best Directors Working Today
Bill Hader earned critical acclaim for his work on Barry, going beyond his on-screen performance. He was already famous from Saturday Night Live as a gifted impressionist and performer, but Barry showcased his talents as a serious dramatic actor, a skilled writer and showrunner, and a promising director. Hader redefined action filmmaking with his distinctive style – using static camera angles and realistic violence – creating a minimalist and naturalistic approach that was surprisingly intense and impactful, moving away from typical flashy action sequences.
Bill Hader is making his first feature film as a director, a horror movie called They Know. It’s about a divorced father who becomes wary of his ex-wife’s new partner. His work directing Barry, particularly as the show got more intense, showed he could build a chilling and unsettling mood, similar to the styles of David Lynch and the Coen brothers. A horror movie directed by Hader seems likely to be excellent. Now that the funding is secured and production is underway, it’s up to him to deliver.
