As a seasoned viewer with a penchant for gripping narratives and immersive worlds, I must say I’m thrilled to see The Last of Us Season 2 gracing our screens in 2025. Having traversed the post-apocalyptic wasteland alongside Joel and Ellie, I can only imagine what emotional rollercoasters await us in the sequel.
In keeping with HBO’s custom, the season finale of one series is usually followed by sneak peeks of upcoming original shows. Before the finale of Gotham’s Penguin, this pattern persisted as it offered a glimpse into the shows set to premiere on HBO and Max during the last two months of 2024 and the entire year of 2025. Notably, the final teaser was, of course, for HBO’s highly anticipated second season of The Last of Us, based on the video game.
In this adaptation of The Last of Us, not much screen time is dedicated to it initially, but viewers catch a heartfelt glimpse into the complex relationship between Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey). This is particularly evident in the choices Joel made to protect Ellie during Season 1. The camera also focuses on Joel’s guitar, a symbolic item from the game that he eventually gives to Ellie. A brief glimpse of Catherine O’Hara’s character, a unique therapist created for the show, hints at her potential role as the only individual with whom Joel may willingly confide about his strained relationship with Ellie.
The trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 appearing at the end suggests it might not come out until late in 2025, given that its adaptation from The Last of Us Part 2 is expected to span multiple seasons, as indicated by co-director Neil Druckmann. Furthermore, hints have been dropped about the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled about the upcoming revelations! HBO’s sneak peek hinted at Dune: Prophecy arriving later this month and Creature Commandos in December. The animated series will kick off the new DC Universe, setting the stage for next year’s Superman reboot movie. To top it off, the trailer showcased glimpses from Peacemaker Season 2, which seems to intertwine with the new DC U, despite the initial season being rooted in the DC Extended Universe. I can feel my brain cells working overtime trying to wrap my head around this!
Apart from The White Lotus, The Gilded Age, and The Righteous Gemstones, other fresh and recurring series will be making their debut on HBO in the year 2025 as well.
