Richard Gadd, the creator of the hit show Baby Reindeer, is back with a new drama called Half Man. A recently released trailer offers a first look at the intense and compelling story he’s telling for BBC and HBO.
After the Netflix series Baby Reindeer became popular, viewers tried to identify the woman who inspired the character of Martha, leading to unwanted attention for Fiona Harvey, a woman in Scotland. While she wasn’t found guilty of stalking the show’s creator, Richard Gadd, Netflix’s Benjamin King stated she was subject to a court order related to claims of harassment.
Harvey subsequently sued the streaming service for $170 million regarding the popular series. The lawsuit is still ongoing in the US, and there haven’t been many updates since June 2025.
Richard Gadd is releasing his new series, Half Man, on HBO and the BBC, and the recently released trailer suggests it will be a gripping and unsettling story similar to his previous hit, Baby Reindeer.

The new series opens with Richard Gadd playing Ruben and Jamie Bell as Niall, who were an odd pair of friends as teens – they had very different personalities. Ruben is boisterous and prone to violence, while Niall is reserved and introverted. Years later, Ruben unexpectedly appears at Niall’s wedding and takes the microphone, declaring he has a story to tell about Niall Kennedy.
The video then really dives into their lives growing up together. It’s tough to watch Niall getting picked on at school, and things get even more complicated when we see a flashback of Ruben getting arrested – it looks like it involved Niall and a boxcutter. Then, it jumps to the present day and shows Ruben getting arrested again after some kind of fight, and Niall actually goes to visit him while he’s in jail. It’s a lot to take in!
Ruben confronted his old friend, accusing him of blaming Ruben for everything. He added that his friend had spent his life trying to please others instead of following his own path.
The show hints at Niall grappling with his identity during his youth, and depicts Ruben picking up a woman and sharing a kiss with her at her door.

Similar to Baby Reindeer, this show will explore complex ideas about what it means to be a man and the impact of social class, all told through the contrasting experiences of its main characters.
Richard Gadd’s “Half Man” begins with Ruben unexpectedly appearing at Niall’s wedding after thirty years. He seems nervous and unlike himself, and a violent outburst soon sends the story flashing back through their shared history, from the 1980s to the present day.
I’m so excited for “Half Man” to finally come out! It’s hitting HBO here in the US starting April 23rd, and our friends across the pond in the UK can watch it on BBC iPlayer from April 24th. While we wait, I’m checking out a list of the most hyped TV shows coming in 2026!
