Set in the 1990s, the show depicts Jake’s ambitious efforts to become a respected reporter, which lead him to cover Tokyo’s criminal underworld and the violent conflicts between yakuza gangs. He surprisingly forms a friendship with a key member of one of these gangs, a connection that boosts his career but also puts him in danger.
The HBO Max series Tokyo Vice, starring Ansel Elgort as Jake, is based on the real-life experiences detailed in Jake Adelstein’s book. Filmed mostly in Tokyo, Japan, the show also features Ken Watanabe, Rachel Keller, and Show Kasamatsu, who delivers a standout performance as a member of the yakuza, Sato. As a huge crime drama fan, I absolutely recommend diving into both seasons of Tokyo Vice all at once – it’s the perfect way to experience it. The show is so immersive, really putting you in Tokyo, that I found myself immediately hitting ‘next episode.’ Honestly, by the end of season two, I was completely hooked and baffled that HBO would cancel it, especially when it felt like it was finally hitting its stride. It’s a real shame!
Both critics and viewers thought season 2 of Tokyo Vice was a significant step up from its already impressive first season. With a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it was one of HBO’s best new seasons of 2024. Many fans are disappointed that the show won’t be continuing, especially after such a strong and promising second season.
Even though Tokyo Vice didn’t quite reach its full potential, it’s still a standout modern noir and crime thriller on HBO Max, perfect for a captivating weekend watch.
