Even as the deal for Netflix is still being finalized, HBO Max is making significant progress by expanding its streaming service. Warner Bros., the company that owns HBO, announced in late October 2025 that it was being put up for sale, a move that had been discussed for several years.
In early December 2025, Netflix announced it would be acquiring Warner Bros., encompassing its film and TV studios, HBO, and HBO Max. This major deal has generated significant buzz and sparked conversations about what the future holds for HBO and how this sale could reshape the entertainment industry.
Even with all the recent news about Netflix, HBO Max is growing! As reported by Deadline, HBO Max is now available in Belgium and Austria through a partnership with the French company Canal+.
Beyond launching in two new European countries, this deal also extends Warner Bros. Discovery’s partnership with Canal+ across Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. This includes continued access to HBO Max, the renewal of several Warner Bros. Discovery channels, and the right to show Warner Bros. movies on pay television.

This announcement is particularly relevant considering Warner Bros.’ existing relationship with Netflix. The agreement is a key part of HBO’s long-term plan to become more accessible worldwide. HBO Max has already launched in several European countries over the last year, and is now preparing to launch in the UK.
This agreement also includes continued broadcasting of Warner Bros. channels in various African countries via MultiChoice Group, which was recently acquired by Canal+. For instance, viewers in South Africa will be able to watch CNN International and Cartoon Network exclusively.
The report highlights that Canal+ already has agreements to distribute content on Netflix. If the current deal with Netflix is finalized, Canal+ will then oversee all of HBO Max’s distribution partnerships, including the existing one with Netflix.
Even before the deal with Netflix is complete, this shows HBO Max is making a strong push to reach more viewers around the world. Despite Warner Bros. being for sale, HBO remains determined to be a leading force in global entertainment.
Canal+ is a major international distributor, meaning they’ll be a powerful player for Netflix to navigate if the acquisition goes through. This highlights that even if the deal is approved, there will be many complex logistical issues to resolve, involving HBO Max’s existing agreements and more.
