HBO Max Cancels 92% Rated Show After Just One Season

After a two-year hiatus following its rebranding, HBO Max has officially resurfaced as one of the top streaming platforms. Over the years, it has gone through several name changes, and in 2023, it became simply Max following WarnerMedia’s merger with Discovery. Now, HBO Max is back stronger than ever, but not all original shows previously available with an HBO Max subscription have been transferred. It appears that one of the platform’s initial actions under its new name has been to cancel a highly-rated show.

Approximately a week following the Season 1 conclusion, the crime drama “Duster” produced by J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan has been unexpectedly canceled, as reported by Deadline. Despite boasting a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being hailed as the most stylish streaming show currently available, “Duster” failed to generate significant viewer interest. Consequently, while it consistently ranked within the Top 10 shows on HBO Max, it didn’t manage to break into Nielsen’s list of top streaming originals. In a statement to Deadline, HBO Max explained:

Although HBO Max has decided not to produce a second season of Duster, we’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the extraordinarily talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and our associates at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. We take great pride in this series starring Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson, and we’d like to express our gratitude towards them, as well as the entire cast and crew, for their outstanding teamwork and cooperation.

HBO Max: Plans start from $9.99 a month

For just $9.99 per month, you can access this service that offers timeless HBO shows such as Game of Thrones and The Sopranos. Take advantage of this offer now!

It’s particularly disheartening to learn about the cancellation of the long-awaited series, Duster, especially considering fans have been anticipating its release for five years now. Originally greenlit in April 2020, filming wrapped up some time ago. Reports suggest that the cast contracts had expired and were not renewed, although it remains unclear if this was a factor in the cancellation. Despite studios WBTV and Abrams’ Bad Robot attempting to find another platform for the series by discreetly shopping it around, they were unable to secure a new home once it became apparent that a cancellation was imminent.

The show titled “Duster” made its debut on May 15, featuring actors such as Josh Holloway, Rachel Hilson, Asivak Koostachin, Sydney Elisabeth, Benjamin Charles Watson, Camille Guaty, Adriana Aluna Martinez, Greg Grunberg, and Keith David. The plot is set in the year 1972 and revolves around the FBI’s first black female agent who teams up with a skilled driver in the Southwest to dismantle a burgeoning criminal organization.

Duster” is among several television series that were canceled after only one season in 2025, adding another unfortunate entry to the list of shows ending. Warner Bros. has attempted to find a new home for the show, but it appears that the possibility of its return has significantly decreased. At this time, no clear explanation for the cancellation has been provided, but it seems likely that the series did not garner the popularity that HBO Max had anticipated.

With HBO Max’s rebrand, we can expect even more exciting shows in our future! The popular medical drama “The Pitt” is currently filming for its second season, and the platform has officially commissioned a new spinoff of “The Big Bang Theory” as a series. While it might not be everyone’s favorite show “Duster,” having additional content definitely beats nothing at all.
