The announcements about the actors for HBO’s new Harry Potter TV series are reminiscent of reading the final book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. Just like that challenging book, it was filled with personal strife as characters journeyed through difficult times, leaving readers doubting if they would ever reach the end. The news about the upcoming adaptation has been gradually released – John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Nick Frost as Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape – but none of them were the main character we’ve all been waiting for: Harry Potter. However, after numerous auditions by thousands of children, HBO has finally unveiled its new trio: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
It seems quite plausible that these three names, which are found in two out of every three Harry Potter books, indicate that these children possess some magical abilities. Although Stanton has some theater background as one of the numerous Matildas on the West End, McLaughlin and Stout appear to be novices. McLaughlin seems to have had a minor role in a movie with Nick Frost, who is about to play Hagrid, while Stout shows a striking resemblance to the Weasley family if a photograph is any indication. Or perhaps it’s their hair that gives that impression.
One might question whether it’s appropriate to introduce children to a contentious television series given the ongoing debates, such as J.K. Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues and the fanbase’s focus on racial accuracy that some find odd. The fact that DiscussingFilm and HBO have disabled comments on the casting decision doesn’t exactly foster a positive outlook.
In the 2021 HBO special commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter films, Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson shared memories about how Chris Columbus and the crew created a protective environment on set, making it feel like they were all attending school together. Considering their current successes – one winning a Tony Award, another being friends with M. Night Shyamalan, and a third owning a gin company – it’s clear that the original trio have turned out well. As Francesca Gardiner takes on the role of showrunner to expand her vision for the Harry Potter universe, one can only hope she fosters a similarly nurturing atmosphere. If necessary, disabling comments might be necessary. The big question now is: Who will portray Malfoy in the future?
