HBO Among Buyers of Beta Film’s Hot Central Eastern European Slate Led by ‘Soviet Jeans,’ ‘Operation Sabre’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As someone who has been immersed in the world of international television for decades, I can confidently say that the Central Eastern Europe (CEE) region is quickly becoming a powerhouse in the global TV scene. The success stories of shows like “Operation Sabre” and “Soviet Jeans,” which have garnered numerous awards and been picked up by prestigious broadcasters such as HBO, are testament to this fact.

Prior to the Cannes Mipcom gathering, Beta Film has sealed several significant agreements on six top-tier series from Central Eastern Europe. This is evidence of the region’s rapid evolution into a highly sought-after location for multi-region players like HBO, Canal+, and Walter Presents, who are eagerly seeking culturally relevant stories with global appeal. Five of these shows boast a collection of prestigious awards.

I’m thrilled to bring attention to an outstanding series that has garnered significant recognition – “Operation Sabre.” This captivating production won a Special Interpretation Award at Canneseries and was crowned Best Central and Eastern European (CEE) Drama at the Serial Killer Festival in the Czech Republic. HBO has acquired it for the CEE region, and Filmin for Spain and Portugal. As a supporter, I can’t help but be proud of its accomplishments!

Producer Snežana van Houwelingen of This and That Productions expressed great joy and appreciation for having Beta Film as a partner, given their exceptional work in sales. She is also eagerly anticipating the Serbian premiere on RTS, slated for Nov. 2. In an interview with EbMaster, she emphasized that the feedback from local viewers holds significant weight for them, as it played a crucial role in shaping the series during its development.

The upcoming destination for Goran Stanković’s Serbian thriller in its festival tour is the TV industry presentation at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, known as TV Beats Forum.

The beloved dramedy series “Soviet Jeans,” produced by Tasse Film and distributed by Beta Film, is set to be broadcast in over 20 territories. Deals have been made with Walter Presents for North America, the U.K., and Ireland, HBO for the CEE region, Arte for Germany and France, Filmin for Spain and Portugal.

A tale about a defiant American rock enthusiast who established an unauthorized denim manufacturing within a psychiatric hospital in 1979 Latvia, garnered audience acclaim at Series Mania and swept up best series, script, and actor awards at Latvia’s National Film Awards, will debut this spring on the Baltic streaming platform Go3.

Two successful series from acclaimed Bosnian filmmakers have secured distribution agreements in significant regions. Jasmila Žbanić’s crime drama “I Know Your Soul” (winner of the Sarajevo Film Festival), which earned an Oscar nomination for “Quo Vadis, Aida?”, has been acquired by Arte for Germany and France, as well as HBO for Central and Eastern Europe. On the other hand, Danis Tanovic’s crime thriller “The Hollow” (winner of the Oscar for “No Man’s Land”), is set to air in Australia through public broadcaster SBS. These series were produced by Deblokada and SCCA/pro.ba respectively, for BH Telecom.

Simultaneously, the Ukrainian film drama titled “In Her Car,” which had previously been acquired by Japan, Latvia, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia, has now sealed new agreements with RTE for Ireland and Canal+ for Austria, Poland, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Romania.

The show was jointly created by Starlight Media and Gaumont, along with partners ZDFneo, France Televisions, SRF. It was also supported by Dreaming Sheep Company, Nordic public broadcasters SVT, DR, NRK, RÚV, and Yle.

Additionally, the chilling Czech thriller titled “Ultimatum,” co-produced by Czech Television, KFS Production, and TV JOJ, has been acquired by Walter Presents for broadcast in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

As a movie reviewer, I can’t help but marvel at the flourishing business Beta Film has with series hailing from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Veronika Kovacova, EVP International Sales & Acquisitions for Eastern Europe, Asia, Turkey, and the Middle East, shares my sentiments. She notes that the variety of productions from this region is not just in quantity, but more significantly, in quality. The CEE series are no longer mere numbers on a production line; they’re top-notch stories waiting to be discovered.

International buyers are seeking premium drama content, and the improvement in production quality has sparked interest in our region. For quite some time now, we’ve been an active player in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), forming numerous collaborations that have allowed us to produce a wide array of projects that have made their mark globally. Some examples include “The Silence”, “Maria Theresa”, and “The Pleasure Principle”, among others, which have traveled extensively across the globe.

Apart from these titles, the prominent independent distributor Beta Film based in Munich will present a diverse collection of scripted content suitable for various age groups at Mipcom. Headlining this slate is the epic “Rise of the Raven,” which is scheduled to have its world premiere on October 22 in the Grand Auditorium.
