In the sixth episode of Daredevil’s reboot, Daredevil: Born Again, a character from the Hawkeye series, famously known as The Swordsman, makes his comeback. If you happen to have forgotten about this character or perhaps didn’t catch the Marvel Cinematic Universe show, we’re here to fill you in on the details.
This week, Disney Plus served up an extra dose of excitement for Daredevil fans, as they released not one but two episodes featuring the Man Without Fear on the same day.
As a gamer, I can understand why people might feel this way. In Daredevil’s Episode 5, we find ourselves in a compact, yet brilliantly crafted scenario where Matt Murdock faces off against a gang of cunning Irish bank robbers in the heart of New York City. However, it’s worth noting that this episode doesn’t necessarily move the overall narrative forward much.
In Episode 6, the plot progresses as Matt manages to locate Muse and the Kingpin engages in illicit activities, adding some extra pounds along the way. This setup leads to an unanticipated appearance by a special guest.
Who is the Swordsman?
Known as Jacques Duquesne, this affluent society figure doubles as a secret protector, debuting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Hawkeye. The character is portrayed by Tony Dalton, recognized primarily for his role as Lalo Salamanca in Better Call Saul.
It turned out that Eleanor, not the suspect Kate Bishop initially had in mind, was responsible for the murder of Armand Duquenesque. Eleanor had been secretly involved with Wilson Fisk, and Armand had grown suspicious of this connection, ultimately leading to his death at her hands.
Ultimately, even though Eleanor tried to falsely accuse him of Armand’s murder and secure a conviction on money laundering charges, he was found not guilty – most significantly, he became an important partner for Kate and Hawkeye in their fight against the Tracksuit Mafia.
In a somewhat analogous manner to his storyline in Marvel comics, he debuted as a foe who later betrayes the team in The Avengers issue #19 (1965). After that, he transformed into a mercenary villain. Later on, he re-joined the Avengers, taking part in the Avengers vs Defenders conflict and even supporting them against Kang.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s not much information available about him. During the series Hawkeye, it’s revealed that he was born into affluence and has never held a regular job.
By the very nature of his name, it’s evident that he boasts exceptional swordsmanship, having developed an early affinity for swords since childhood.
Why is the Swordsman in Daredevil: Born Again?
It’s uncertain yet whether the Swordsman will play a significant part in Daredevil: Born Again, but it appears that his character might get entangled in the Kingpin’s crusade against masked heroes.
Fisk has sworn to clear New York’s streets of vigilantes such as Daredevil, The Punisher, and Spider-Man, which places the Swordsman under threat. He might also be after his wealth; given that a mayor requires funds to uphold promises, Jacques is well-off in cash.
