Hawaiian Pop Musician Don Ho Gets Documentary Treatment From ‘Superpower’ Director Aaron Kaufman (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie lover with a deep appreciation for music documentaries and a soft spot for stories of underdog success, I’m thrilled to hear about the upcoming documentary on Hawaiian musician Don Ho. Having grown up listening to his catchy tunes that blended Hawaiian music with pop, I can only imagine the fascinating journey this film will take us on.

A film is being made about the life of Hawaiian musician Don Ho, with Aaron Kaufman overseeing production. Kaufman previously collaborated with Sean Penn on the documentary “Superpower” regarding Ukraine. Verdi Productions and Public School are producing this project, which highlights Ho’s career as a renowned pop artist from Hawaii post-statehood.

Ho, known for his 1966 song “Tiny Bubbles” from his album of the same name, melded Hawaiian music with pop, and worked in the business for almost five decades. He also had his own variety show on ABC from 1976 through 1977, “The Don Ho Show.” The film will feature never-before-seen footage of the musician, along with interviews with his family, friends, associates and various celebrities, according to producer Chad Verdi. “Our goal is to honor the legacy of this important figure in pop culture and Hawaiian history – Don Ho,” says Rhode Island-based Verdi.

In the film’s description, we discover the extraordinary journey of this unexpected entertainment phenomenon as depicted in the documentary. It delves deep into the intriguing tales of Hawaii’s statehood, organized crime, political corruption, polygamy, power struggles, a daring heist aimed at stealing a superstar’s legacy, and the shattering of America’s cherished illusions. Additionally, the film offers exclusive, previously unseen home footage of the iconic singer.

More recently, Kaufman headed the production of “Superpower,” a documentary chronicling Ukraine’s resilience in safeguarding their independence following Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022. This project entailed no less than seven visits, covering almost two years. During this time, Penn carried out interviews with Volodymyr Zelensky and other key figures. The documentary can now be accessed for free streaming on YouTube.

Nancy Sinatra played a key role in bringing Don Ho to Reprise Records and collaborated with TV producer George Slaughter on the project. Chad A. Verdi, Anthony Gudas, Michelle Verdi, Chad Verdi Jr., and Paul Luba are producing the project. Sera Verdi holds the position of executive producer.
