As a cinephile with a keen interest in the behind-the-scenes drama of Hollywood, I’ve followed the Harvey Weinstein case with a mix of shock and dismay. The latest developments are deeply concerning. The man is 72, battling multiple health issues, and now being transported back and forth between Bellevue Hospital and Rikers Island. It’s not just unjust, it’s downright inhumane.
On Monday, it was reported that Harvey Weinstein was returned to Bellevue Hospital following some concerning blood test results, according to his legal representative.
72-year-old Weinstein is currently detained at Rikers Island, waiting for his retrial on rape charges scheduled for next year in New York. He has been diagnosed with leukemia, diabetes, as well as several other medical conditions such as coronary artery disease and sleep apnea.
Over the past week, lawyers representing him submitted a request for $5 million from New York City, stating that he endured abhorrent and inhuman living conditions at Rikers Island. This situation allegedly deteriorated his health so severely that he became gravely concerned for his own life.
On Monday, lawyer Imran Ansari stated that Weinstein needs immediate medical attention, and it’s anticipated he’ll stay at Bellevue until his health improves.
I’m stating that denying him proper care isn’t just a case of medical negligence, but it also infringes upon his fundamental rights as outlined in the constitution,” I asserted.
Last week, Judge Laura Taylor Swain hinted at assigning a manager to oversee Rikers Island due to an alarmingly high degree of violence within the prison, despite it functioning under a consent decree for years. She pointed out numerous brawls, stabbings, attacks on guards, and inadequate training and supervision of prison staff as key concerns.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’ve previously likened the environment to a grim gulag, where those confined are treated more like beasts than human beings. On my recent visit, I discovered that Weinstein’s clothing hadn’t been laundered in weeks and bore stains of what appeared to be blood, perhaps from an intravenous drip. I claimed he wasn’t being administered necessary medications and was denied proper medical attention.
Previously this year, Weinstein had been housed at the Mohawk Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison located in Rome, New York. He was incarcerated there, serving a sentence of 23 years due to rape and sexual assault convictions. However, in April, the state’s supreme court overturned his conviction by a narrow margin of 4 votes to 3.
Afterward, Weinstein was returned to New York City to prepare for a new trial. Over several instances, he’s been moved between Rikers and Bellevue. His legal team claims that Bellevue released him too soon, causing his condition to deteriorate at Rikers, necessitating another admission to Bellevue.
The former Hollywood producer is next due in court on Jan. 29.
