82-year-old Harvey Laidman, who gained fame as a TV director from his work on shows like “The Waltons,” “Matlock” and “7th Heaven,” passed away on January 3rd, in Simi Valley, California.
The Hollywood Reporter was informed by Dan Laidman, his son, that Laidman had passed away due to cancer.
Over the span of many years in his career, Laidman was responsible for directing episodes across various television series such as “Hawaii Five-O”, “The Incredible Hulk”, “Quantum Leap”, “The Dukes of Hazzard”, “Magnum, P.I.”, “Jake and the Fatman”, “The Fitzpatricks”, “Eight Is Enough”, “The Blue Knight” and “Kojak”.

Chester Spier, who worked as a set decorator on “Matlock”, paid tribute to his longtime friend Harvey on Facebook. In his post, he mentioned that Harvey had an exceptional sense of humor and a keen eye for finding unique perspectives when filming, which significantly enhanced the show’s visual style and humor.
Following his graduation from the University of Southern California in 1964, Laidman embarked on his career with a three-year stint at KTTV. Subsequently, he was admitted into the DGA Producer Training program. During the 70s, he served as an assistant director for movies such as “Airport” and “Red Sky at Morning”. His first directing role came in the third season of “The Waltons”.
From 2011 up until the previous year, Laidman served as a director’s instructor at California State University, Northridge. Today, he is sadly missed by his family, which includes his son Dan Laidman, his wife Susan Laidman, his sister, and his grandchildren.
